One more thing to add to my comment about aluminum heads (gear you probably didn't see it, i edited it while you were posting), if you do good heads/cam/intake now, and you don't get to the supercharger, at least you will have pretty good numbers to hold you over for a while.
The gt40p stuff, not so much.

You could go with the aluminum heads, high dollar intake, etc....but you probably wont' need to. Seriously....a $500 Explorer top end, off the shelf cam grind and 8-10psi will get you well into and possibly above the 400rwhp range. Add a little stroke to the engine and you could make more torque and horsepower still, with less effort.

It’s not that all those things aren’t nice…..but you could do it with a lot less an have plenty left over to address the other areas of the car we suggested.

It's got a cold air intake, stock intake manifold, but I already have ported explorer heads on it. So aftermarket aluminum heads would probably be the biggest chunk of change, cam, intake, headers....figure out the SC thing later on probably.
I've got control arms and subframe connectors already, just need to install them. So some of my suspension plans are already in motion. I'd like to make the 4 to 5 lug swap for brake reasons though. 331 or 347 sounds like a good start! I'm finally gonna get to start on my project because I just bought a house so I'll have my own garage now....keep the suggestions and conversations coming!

I think gear banger has the best point. A 302 based build will get you exactly where you want to be and be easier on the pocket. I have a 331 with 11:1 comp, edelbrock heads, 610 lift cam, 750 dp carb etc and dyno was 385 rwhp. If I put a set of AFR's I will get the 400 hp, and I have a plan for a 100 shot. IMO this kind of power is an awesome street car.

I would stick with the 302 stroke it, turbo super charge whatever, but build it 100% correct and put the additional money into getting the power to the ground. Dropping a 408 sounds great but there is always the hidden costs that you didnt factor in and if your not doing all the work your self it may take a long time.

I do plan to do all the work myself, minus machining work on the block/heads/intake and what not. Compression ratio of 11:1....is that too high for adding a supercharger down the road somewhere? Is there a certain ratio limit for nitrous?

there is no limit for compression for any power adder... the higher the better actually

BUT the tuning becomes MUCH MUCH harder the higher you get. your window becomes much much smaller

as for nitrous... it loves compression. the race car is 14:1 and we hit it with a "little" nitrous

I am on this same track as you. and so far i have $1300 for my AFR 185 heads$,2100 for my 408 all forged eagle kit,$700 for my trick flow intake,$1800 for my POS on3 turbo kit. My biggest draw back will be heads also, will be a killer TQ monster but probably run out of steam around 6000. But i dont care cause i dont plan to spin it that high anyways. Im still looking into the cam and lifter conversion wich will be close to another $700 then valve springs for another $200.I might for now run my flat tappet cam it actually might help being so small.......
