Just got done detailing her on Tuesday night thanks to going out a buying a twin work light...as hard as I try to, I still can't understand why the g/f calls me a "car geek"

Looks good. Looks like you should've clay barred though. Remember to clay bar next time. It'll get rid of all those little scratches and your paint will look even deeper. Nice work, though. Looks like a days worth of work.

Clay bars do NOT remove scratches. Clay bar removes containment in paint.

The only thing that removes defects in paint is paint corrective polishes ...

Aggressive clay bars actually induce mircro-marring. Trust me on this one. I do this as a "side" trade and for my own pleasure. I've got about 3,000 dollars into detailing supplies, just currently. I don't even want to know how much I've spent over the past couple of years.

Just about anything you do to your car including washing can cause micro scratches in the clearcoat. I'm no expert but that's what I've read, I've been looking into trying to fix the darn swirl marks on my black paint. Looks like ass in the sunlight.

No, no, not at all. I'm just saying that aggressive clay bars can cause micromarring which would be fixed by the paint corrective steps to be taken next. I'm just saying that clay bars do not under any circumstances hide or remove paint defects.

Well, to remove swirl marks and micro marring you need a paint corrective polish which actually removes the scratch and doesn't hide it. There are products out there that hide them though. Of course washing, drying, QD'ing can all cause micro marring if you don't know what you're doing, not using the right products, etc.

A real detail would consist of a very good wash, claying, paint corrective polishes until it fixed it which is usually a few different steps in itself, a Iso. Alcohol wipe down which will remove any polishes that are hiding the defects to show you the paint. Than onto a sealant and/or glaze, and than topped with a wax.

I'm going to the NVMC picnic tomorrow (well...later this morning now). Hopefully the lighting will be good enough for some great pics with tons of other Stangs as a background. I'll also get a chance next Sunday with about a half dozen other Stangs from the club on a cruise along part of the Blue Ridge Parkway

I know it's a problem, but I look for reasons to take at least two dozen pics every so often of the car and I'm definitely not ashamed

I did clay it... I don't know how long I spent, but it got done.
To help prevent adding scratches I made sure to keep the paint well lubricated with the included spray and used front to back motions only (not circular).

How much would a good professional step by step detail like your describing cost?

Do you mean how much would I charge? .. or how much would it cost you to do it yourself? I just charged a guy $250 for a 03 Cobra which was low for what I ended up doing to it. It took me a good 18 hours to do it. I did EVERYTHING including undercarriage, wheel wells, I'm talking about everything. The guy came to pick it up and couldn't believe his eyes and left $500 lighter.
