Hey guys,

This is my first mustang, and I love her to death. I've had it for a week and I'm already getting paranoid about noises. So here's whats going on -

I have a strange rattle coming from somewhere, I can't quite make out where it is. It is noticeable in most all the gears, and 3x as noticeable when the car is cold. It has a certain rev range and throttle that it likes to make itself known, I can really get it to sing in 3rd, at about 2000 revs, under maybe 10% throttle. It's a very fast rattle, my best guess is valve noise, but I hear some guys say that a loose or bumped midpipe can cause this. I have scraped my midpipe in the time I've owned the car. (I think, might have been the mufflers..)

Anyways, onto the video. Car is cold here, this is pulling out of work. I noticed the noise bounce off the walls as I drove by and figured tonight was the night I post something about it. The rattle comes through at about :07, a little stab at :15, another at :19. Thinking back, probably should've rolled up the windows. My apologies.

Thanks for any and all of the help guys. I hope to be a member for a long time, assuming this baby holds together on me. Ha!

EDIT: Also wanted to mention, my untrained ears aside, I can't seem to replicate the noise when the car isn't under load. Tugging on the throttle in my garage seems to show me nothing. Strange..

Ohhh the infamous Mach 1 rattling.

Hopefully not, but it sounds like the the mismatched wrist-pin issue on the the Mach 1's

Thanks for the heads up. This is not good.

Luckily, I have had the car for a week and I left the ford dealer with a 3 month / 3000 mile warranty, so it might give me something to fall back on. Fingers crossed, I'm scheduled next thursday. Is something like this eventually catastrophic to the engine? It seems like it might be.

Never fails... someone buys a 4v, hears a weird noise, and people tell him it is some weird obscure super serious ing problem...

What oil are you using?

I'm not 100% sure, I had the dealership change it before I drove it off the lot, and they said they use motorcraft. I appreciate the input!

Here's a better video for you guys: Rattle starts in around :06

Mine ticks with motorcraft 5w-20 but is quiet with mobil1 5w-30. When I got it people would tell me I needed new heads or a new engine or some . That was years ago and it runs great.

Hmm, I've gotten that same reaction too. I don't know whether to worry about it or not, but it seems like a good time to do it whil eI have a warranty. I might try the heavier oil next week..

If the noise goes away when it's warm it's probably piston slap. Although it's a 2V, mine makes similar noises with the throttle just so at low RPM and light load when it's cold. I've long since stopped worrying about it but I don't linger there with it rattling either. Drive through it and let the engine warm before getting on it.

Back in 2005 I commented in a thread on the Corral. Ford acknowledged what was then called the "death rattle" in the forums:

http://forums.corral.net/forums/4465809-post12.html

as well as:

http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/threads/slight-knock-at-start-up.582228/

http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-for...ine-sound-when-cold-or-reving-at-idle.605160/

I'm still not sure why "SSM 15934" talks only about GT and Bullitt 2Vs but the symptoms sound very familiar...

So, I did a little more research today.. the noise only appears under load, 100% sure. If I rev it up to 2k with the clutch in, nothing. Let the clutch out (I'm in first) ever so slightly and there it is. What could this point to? TOB?

Machs are infamous for timing chain/tensioner problems...that's probably your issue....same symptoms.
