Just picked up a new T-5 to rebuild It's in peices now. Friend of mine was attempting to rebuild it and gave up. I ended up selling him my freshly rebuilt 300 ft-lbs rated T-5. He ended up giving me the trans he was working on so now i have a new project.

Checking over some of the parts, i think it's a 4-banger T-5.

The buck tag shows 1352-52-194 which comes back as an '89 2.3L T-5.

Input shaft measures 0.59", which is the size of the 4-banger input.

COuntergear number is 048, which i have not yet identified. I have a feeling this is going to come back as a 4-banger countergear. Can anyone confirm this?

Now i would be disappointed, but this is a free T-5. The only thing it needs is a new countergear as has a small chip. Unsure if it even needs to be replaced. It's chipped on the 1set gear portion of the countergear. My friend bought all new synchros and bearings for it, so all i would need is a new countergear and i'm all set.

Ebay has a auction selling a turbo coupe countergear and other parts for $40. I may buy this and just slap it all together. The auction lists the countergear number as 048

The auction comes with 1st and 2nd and 3rd, as my buddy inadvertantly bought a new 1st and 2nd for a V8 trans.

nevermind, seems i've indentified my parts

It's a 4-banger T-5 for sure. Problem is my buddy replaced 1st gear and 2nd with a 1990+ V8 1st and 2nd. It's a WC tranny as it has all the 3-peice synchros exactly like like the last v8 T-5 i have rebuilt.

1 thing that's confusing is the 5th gear. I checked Hanlon motorsports and they show the 59 tooth drive gear and 27 tooth driven gear as a 0.68 ratio from a V8. Odd.

Here's my dilemma.

Option 1.) Rebuild it as a 4-banger t-5. Bid on current ebay auction and possibly win a new counter gear, 1st, 2nd and 3rd for cheap (auction at $40 right now). All other parts new, sell off brand new V8 1st gear on Ebay. Have dirt cheap spare tranny or use it with 3.73's for some fun :)

Option 2.) Replace input shaft, countergear, and 3rd gear with 1990+ parts for 300 ft-lb rating.

So which way should I go? Cheap and 4-banger, or spend a little cash and rebuild it as a v8 trans?? Keep in mind i already have a 50K mile '89 V8 T-5 in perfect condition i was planning on using.

By the way those who know me on here know i get KILLER deals on ebay! :) so i can do either route pretty damn cheaply. I just need the hard parts, already have the bearings and synchros

yup, it's a 4-banger.

Just need to decide what route to go.

Replace countergear and 1st and 2nd cheaply and keep it a 4-banger. Basically if i buy this auction then i will be all set and can call it a day.

Or replace countergear, 3rd gear and input shaft and make it a V8 trans.

Everything else is this trans is brand new. Synchros, bearngs, a new V8 1st and 2nd gear and 1-2 synchro assembly. 5th gear are the same hard parts as the v8 version. It's just the gearing through the 4-banger input and counter give it the 0.79 ratio. It would be nice to keep that, but a change to v8 parts would revert it to 0.68
