New to EFI mustangs, have some Q's

Thanks for looking.
I just purchased my first non carb fed 302 (in an '89 mustang LX hatch) yay.
Its a 5 speed with 80,000 miles. Mods already on it are.

3.73 gear
2 1/2 inch H pipe and cat back (No cats)
255 lph fuel pump
6 point roll cage
Upgraded T-5 (Think he said it had upgraded syncros/forks)
Pro 5.0 short shifter
Hi flow oil system
Open air filter on air intake (really big mod ) Still has stock piping and MAF though.

The deal with it was he has a 331 stroker in it and it blew up so he just dropped the original 302 it came with back in it so he could sell it to finance a new engine hes building. So I'm looking to do some more mods, I was thinking get a set of Long tube headers with 1 5/8 primary's and 2 1/2 collectors, Im thinking that will boost performance good since thats basically the bottle neck in the exhaust system.

As for the engine its self I wasnt sure if buying a real Air intake system and maybe a 70mm MAF would give me decent power. I havent checked the timing yet so I might be able to advance it some and get a little power. I was also thinking about a B303 cam (or something like it) do you think that will be ok with stock heads, intake mani and TB? I plan on upgrading them later.

So basically do you think the Headers, air intake/MAF, and B303 cam will get me some more power or are the stock heads that bad flowing that I shouldnt bother with the 70mm MAF or Cam. Id like to get a cam at least for it so if anyone has a better cam for stock heads/intake mani feel free to speak up. I dont mind a fair idle with lope so I'm looking for something "Fairly" agressive.

Any other suggestions for mods that might work good please speak up.

Also if anyone has any idea of the hp or 1/4 mile time with the mods i have done and will do I'm interested

Also the clutch cable needs to be adjusted, how would I go about doing that? I searched the forum and didnt get anything.

Freeing the flow up with exhaust, bigger MAF and throttle body won't hurt anything and you may get some improvement. As far as the cam goes, with stock untouched heads the stock cam is pretty good. You can try retarding it 4 degrees to pick up some HP.

I took a buddy of mine for a ride in my Stang and he has an identical Stang except his is bone stock. His eyes got kind of wide, he got a grin and then he said his wouldn't even come close.

I am thinking you would want to advance the cam 4* not retard it for a little low mid range grunt. Maf and exhaust are a great way to start, also look at porting the stock intake or maybe a ford explorer intake from a usable yr and a set of cheap GT40iron heads.
Note if you upgrade the heads you can definately make use of an aftermarket cam..my preferred alpha cam would be the E.

On a budget? do the junkyard upgrade...

Gears - 87-88 T-Bird Turbo Coupe rear axle - disc brakes and 3.55 or 3.73 gears in one package for $125-$300. Add another $100-$200 or so to complete the brake upgrade.

94-95 Mustang GT MAF - $40-$100. It is 70 MM instead of the stock 55 MM on regular stangs built prior to 94. It uses a slip on duct on the side that goes to the throttle body and a 4 bolt flange on the other. You need a $25-$35 flange adapter from Pro-M to fit the stock slip on air ducting that goes to the air box. Wiring plugs right in with no changes. *1

95-97 Ford Explorer intake manifold & throttle body $150-$300. The intake manifold flows 220 CFM +, much better than stock. Throttle body is 65 MM, bigger than the 60 MM on stock stangs. I got a 96 with EGR passages that match the stock setup, so my smog gear works just like factory. You’ll need a 65 MM EGR spacer & new gaskets for $65-$90 so you have a place to mount the EGR & throttle linkage.

3G alternator from 94-95 Mustangs or other Ford. $20-$120. A must have to make the electrical system work like it should. You’ll need a 4 gauge power wire and a 125-135 amp fuse to go with it about $15- $30.

Lincoln MK VIII electric fan -$40-$160. Free up some HP by not having to drive the stock fan. The 3G alternator upgrade is a must have prerequisite before you do the MK VIII fan. You won’t have enough electrical power if you don’t do the 3G upgrade.

EDIT: I tried the fan controller and it doesn't work. Don't waste your time and money.


It uses a relay to turn the fan on and off, and uses the computer's temp sense to trigger the fan. It isn't adjustable in terms of temp to turn the fan on and off, but it is cheap. All you need is some 10 gauge wire for the fan power & ground, a 30 amp relay, 30 amp fuse, and some 18 gauge wire for the relay coil wiring.

*1.) I got a metal flange adapter from Powered by Ford for $35 and tax. That was over a year ago. Summit Racing may also have one too.

I would stay away from a 70 MM throttle body, it is a little too big for a street driven 302 without pressurized induction.

Clutch adjustment - the stock unit is a plastic quadrant. You pull up on the clutch pedal to "adjust" it. Not very effective.
There are as many aftermarket clutch cable/qudrant/adjustment gadgets as there are day in a month. Some use an alumimum quadrant with 1, 2 or 3 postions for the cable to hook. Only one of the positions is useful, the others are just for show.


Some use an adjustable cable, others the stock cable.



Some have a firewall adjuster that you tighten or loosen to adjust the clutch. That saves you from crawling under the car to adjust the clutch cable.

Wow thanks for all the info guys, really appriciate it. I think some years of mark VIII'd have 70mm MAF also. I got a 70mm off one of those for a custom turbo set up on my ZX2 then i realized I cant buy stronger trannys and id break the horrible designed spider gear like once a week lol.

With the Intake, MAF, Intake mani/TB, Long tube headers and 2 1/2 in exhaust no cats and a 3.73 gear what do you think that would put my HP/ 1/4 mile at (Roughly)?.
