Newb question (drop-in motors)

Disclaimer: I'm a huuuge newb when it comes to anything but a new 4.6, so bear with me, I'm trying to learn.

Okay, my question:

How feasible is it to just take a 66-69 stang and drop in a 4.6 (specifically an '03 Mach 1) crate engine? What would it take to do this? Would it even fit? Also, how much would a 66-69 with a body that's in fairly good shape but non-running motor run?

well, 65-66 would require extensive modifications because the engine bay is too skinny. ON a 67-69, I believe that the 4.6 barely fits. Of course, you would have to do all of the wiring and all of the special exhaust work. To swap in a 265hp engine (late model mach I), its kind of ridiculous....except for a 'wow' factor.

a 65-69 mustang as a rolling chassis....can run anywhere from $500-$5000. The early models also have some flaws that usually need to be taken care of, especially if you want to buy one in the condition which you described. New floor pans, a cowl repair...can end up being very costly (in excess of $2500), unless you can do it yourself.

265? The Mach 1 is rated at 305hp and is generally underrated. The PI 4.6 SOHC engines are at ~260. Also, why would it be rediculous? I'm curious.

isn't the 4.6 alot heavier? I would think that beefing up the suspension might be in order also. I think it would be easier & more seneible to build a 351w or something like that. I know people have done 4.6 swap, but there alot more involved than just "making it fit", an old V8 make more sense IMHO.

ok...305hp.....

so...a few grand for a modular engine, a few grand in mods to get it to fit and run....Just not worth it in my opinion. There are others on this board that would disagree.

for 3 grand, you can get a complete 345hp 5.0. All you have to add is an intake, carb, and dist and off you go. Much cheaper, more hp, better fit!

I agree with allcar. Not only is the motor wider than a 460, there were never any carbureted versions, so you need a computer, all the sensor, the wiring, fuel lines and tank for fuel injection, cutting the shock towers, etc etc.

If unique is what you seek, and you are made of cash, go for it.

PS: There are dyno proven combos that can be built from start to finish for under $4000 and will give you almost 400hp to the wheels.
