OK, I am new at driving a car with a manual transmission. And I wasn't paying attention when I started the car. What happend was, I had the parking brake engaged, and the car was in 1st gear with the clutch pedal in. Then I dumped the clutch thinking that it was in neutral.. The rear tires chirped, the car jerked forward and stalled. Did I damage anything? If yes, can someone give me a gun so I can shoot myself? The car isn't even broken in yet.

i learned how to drive stick in my stang last summer. hadn't stalled for at least 5 months, and then the other day i was parking at autozone and let the clutch out in 1st gear before turning off the engine instead of the other way around like i do every single time i park. felt like an idiot....oh well, it happens

Don't worry, you didn't damage anything. I am from Europe where 90% of the cars are stick, so I have been driving stick for the last 15 years and I have done the same as you did alot.

Most European cars do not require the clutch to be pressed while you start the car so I have on several occasions tried to start the car while in gear

This is actually pretty helpful. Once I run out of gas 1 block from the gas station. I didn't feel like walking (it was raining) so I put the car in 1st gear and 'pulled' the car to the gas station with my starter motor. I almost run out of juice in my battery but I made it

Everyone is correct, you didn't damage anything. Although I wouldn't make a habit of it!

Well I'm relieved to know that I didn't do any damage..The way the car jerked felt like I screwed up the rear end.

You didn't hurt anything. A few times when i got my stang i drove home with the parking brake up. Well to make a long story short i got a brake up-grade.

If you drive around with the hand brake up your going to mess up your pads and rotors that is all.

If you drive a manual, it will happen eventually.

All I have to say is I am like, you, I almost always make sure the car is in neutral before starting. There is that one time, however, and it will happen to everyone unfortunately.

I did this the other day in reverse. I forgot to take it out of neutral after starting it. Good thing parking brake was still up or else I'd have slammed a wooden fence. I felt stupid. Not as stupid as trying to "race" a Olds 440 but having it in 3rd and not 1st. Man did that thing jerk and jerk and jerk and stall.... Took me 3 tries to figure it out :duh:

Im with everybody else on this. I dont think your hurt nothin. But man thats tough to be learning how to drive a stick with your brand new GT. Just my .02 but i would go rent a car or something with a stick and go practice on some hills. Beat up someone else's car learning and not yours
