What should my next mod be? My current mods are in the sig! Since I am a high school student I am on a budget. I have around $500 to spend, so anything around that is fine. I have a couple ideas in mind:

1) 3.73 Gears and rearend rebuild --- $139.99 for gears + $90.00 for installation kit and then the rest for labor.

2) Used Zex Kit off Ebay --- $300-$350 + $100 dollars for window switch and I could install that myself.

3) Used Intake Manifold --- $300-$500 which I could probably install myself as well.

Which one would be the best choice. Right now I'm leaning toward nitrous because it is the best bang for the buck but I would just like to see what everyone else thinks. It is also a good choice because my car will be just like normal until I want to spray. With 3.73 Gears there is pretty much no first gear and getting traction sucks enough already. And the intake I'm undecided! Sorry so long any help would be appreciated!

Get the intake manifold depending on which one and for how much. Or do the gears, gears will shave a good amount of your time. Nitrous, well nitrous is nice but if that's your daily driver you do risk of damaging parts without the proper setup. Lots of people will tell you'll be fine but pistons don't last forever under that kind of stress. Not to mention the hassle of refilling the bottle everytime you wanna go fast. To properly setup you may need inline fuel pump bigger inejctors and the like.

Used GT40 style manifolds are dirt cheap on eBay. My vote is for gears. Just learn to live with the lack of traction. Granny it through first gear then pound it in second. It becomes a natural thing once you learn that you just can't floor it in second gear.

This is kind of like the chicken or the egg thing: Why buy an intake manifold to make the car breathe better when the car will have a hard time revving up to that point. Buy a 3.73 or a 4.10, and the car will rev up to that point much quicker. A gear makes better use of the parts you have because it puts you in your power band quicker. Like I said, it's 50/50.

I wouldn't fool with nitrous if you aren't going to get the car tuned. Plus, it's not there all the time like a gear or manifold is.

I will vote gears myself over the intake. Unless you are getting a great one of a kind deal on an intake. Like a friend of yours is selling you a nice intake that was professionaly ported for dirt cheap and it won't be around. Joe brings up a good point. However, my stock block sucked in the higher RPM's and I would guess that was due to the intake. That was fixed w/ H C I. :-)

I got 3.73's for my car and I'll probably be swapping them out for some 4.10's soon. It depends on your future goals for your car. Do you want to just stay as a mild bolt-on car or forced induction or wild naturally aspirated combo.

I would say 4.10. It doesn't matter if you are going with some type of forced induction, just put a bigger tire under there to cancel out some of the gearing. As long as you drive under 70 MPH on the freeway with a 4.10, you should be fine and your gas mileage won't suffer. I wouldn't worry about the use of first gear, it's going to be useless with any gear steeper than a 3.55, you will just have to granny it out of 1st.

Everybody talks bad about nitrous, it is not bad, no worse than a super charger, just be smart with it, we arn't ricers, we have more class then that, you don't need to big bottles by tonight and you don't need a direct port nitrous injection and a fogger setup. Don't call it NOS and you don't need enought to blow yourself up period. What I can tell you is that every company will tell you that as long as your motor is sound, you can run 125 shot all day long as long as you are smart. Don't use it below 3000 rpm and don't hit the rev limiter. I would run a 75 shot. Zex is the best way to go, it is the safest. Plus being in High School and having a bottle in your car, thats cool. If that is the way you want to go I can hook you up with my kit, I have everything and the purge valve to go with it

I've got to disagree with that quote. My first geat is quicker, that is true, but it is by no means ineffective. If you have not driven a 94-95 with a T-5 and 373's I think you are gonna be pleasntly surprised. First gear is not as quick as say a light fox coupe with the same ratio. The extra weight of our cars do make a difference.

As for the traction issue. When you have high speed gears, esp 273's, if you loose traction and back off, the control or ability to regain traction is not as effective with 273's as opposed to say 373's. Kinda like when you do a second gear burnout and let off but it keeps spinning and you end up having to completely back out with the throttle to quit spinning.

Thats how I see it.

I would get the 373's :nice:
