Nitrous questions!

So I've been thinking about nitrous lately. I really want the mongoose Vortech kit but the fact is I'm a poor college student, and I think nitrous would be the better option for me. I have a few questions though:

1. If I run a 100 wet shot, can the car be tuned with a xcal2, or will I have to have a shop tune the car on a dyno. How much will that cost?

2. Will I need new injectors/fuel pump with a 100 shot?

3. Is a 100 shot too much for stock internals?

4. Just an estimate, how much will it cost me for the entire 100 wet kit? (including window switches, bottle warmer, safety features, tune, etc)

Also, I tried searching for a nitrous do-it-yourself write up, but found nothing. Is there a thread with some really good info for the nitrous noobies?

Thanks for any info guys!

1. yes you can order a tune and put it on your tuner,
2. no and yes, its not a bad i dea but not needed
3. no but anymore and your pushing it
4. 800-1000

your welcome

1.Honestly you can run up to a 150hp shot on the stock engine you will
just need to upgrade your fuel pump with a 100hp shot or more. Also don't
use a tuner or any kind of ****ty mail order tune. Before you start spraying get a dyno tune or you will be sorry when your engine go's kaboom and you
have to buy another engine.I got two dyno tunes with programed chip with a N/A tune and a Nitrous tune on my old 92 GT for 450.00.It just depends on the tuner really.
2.You will need a upgraded fuel pump I highly recommend the Walbro 255.Make sure your fuel system is running good and change your fuel filter
religously with Motorcraft replacements.A clogged fuel filter would not be
good when spraying.
3.No,you can run up to a 150hp shot on stock internals. It's not the size of the shot that kills engines it's detonation that does it.
4.The two best kits you can run on your car since you have a 4.6L and you are considering a wet kit is NOS's Nozzle kit and Nitrous Express's new plate
kit.It can cost you anywhere from 500.00-1400.00 it just depends on the kit
you go with.Just make sure you get all the saftey goodies and you should be
fine.
5.You can do a search here and you can try modular maddness and modular
misfits for info.
6.The best of luck to you!

1. It can but I'd suggest takig it to a good shop and having it tuned. At least make a pull with a wideband. I ran all last year untuned and when I put it opn the dyno my lean spike in hit 14.5 to 1.
2. Fuel pump You can get away with the stocker but with the price of a fuel pump been only like 100 bucks. why not change it.
3. 100 shot no problems yet and I've sprayed my car more times than I want to think about. If you do some research it seems the majority of the fuel puddling issues occur with people running 150 or bigger shots.
4. Cost depends on the kit you go with if your a shopper or an impulse buyer if you buy used etc... But here's my setup, nx nozzle kit, edelbrock bottle heater, purge, blow down, 2 bottles, msd window switch, tr6 plugs, svt focus pump, xcal2 and tunes. For a total dollar outlay of 1280 bucks.

If I have my car tuned will they put a chip in there or use a handheld tuner like the xcal2? And once the car is tuned, will I have to constantly use 91 octane? Also, what is a "switch chip"? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for the help!

The good thing about a switch chip is that you can have multi programs
on it like a N/A tune for when you are not spraying and a nitrous tune
for when you are spraying.Just make sure your nitrous tune is conservative
for the shot you are spraying.I highly subjest you take Boo's advice and
take at least one dyno pull with a wideband to see where your A/F ratio
is because your stock tune N/A is rich or pig rich.Running nitrous the last
thing you want is to run lean.Any reputable tuner should be able to supply
you with a multi program chip for your car. Also with the chip you can run
87 octane on your N/A tune and you have to run 91 octane or higher when
you are spraying the nitrous.I think you will be fine running a 100 shot on your
car just don't go around spraying all the time and your bottom end should
hold up fine. It's all about the user's knowledge when it comes to running nitrous on your car it's as safe as you make it.

So if they tune my car with out the switch chip, will I have to run 91 constantly? Also, what else do I need besides the NX nozzle kit? I'd like to get all of the safety features. Thanks guys!

No, you don't have to run 91 octane constantly just when you plan on spraying your nitrous.
1.NX wet system
2.MSD Digital window switch
3.Bottle heater
4.Wide open throttle switch
5.Electric bottle opener
6.Purge/Blowdown
7.NGK TR6's (colder plugs)
8.Larger fuel pump (Walbro 255)
9.Dyno Tune

My old set up on my H/C/I 92 GT Nitrous Express custom
shark nozzle #20915 with 75hp jets NX bottle heater,MSD
window switch,one step colder plugs,purge,blowdown,Walbro
255 fuel pump,Dyno tune.
If you are considering a Nitrous Express set up I would get the
4.6L 2 valve plate system #20946.

Don't forget you will lose some power NA when you get the colder plugs. Not much but it takes some.

Nitrous is bad...don't do it...

Ok as far as the octane rating of your fuel. It depends.. hate to be that vague but it does.

Example if you go xcal2 It holds 4 programs. 1 is the stock program the other 3 slots are open. So you can have a Good NA tune, a nitrous tune, and a 3rd slot for whatever you want. I strongly suggest when you take it take it with the fuel you most likely be runnning from the location your most likely to get it. Example where I live we have to use this junky oxygenated fuel. Where my Tuner is they have REAL gas. So I had my car tuned on the 93 octane that I get the most often. That way the car is setup for what I run.
Also the adavantage to me of a flip chip is if your cruising down the road and need that extra lil bit you got it. Or if your on the track racing and that pesky vette is still at your window flip the switch and bye bye. :D
Now if you do like I did last year ****** NOT ENCOURAGED****** and slap the kit on with a set of colder plugs and let it eat. I would run 93 octane at the minium never spray below 1/2 - 1/4 tank I never sprayed below 1/2 tank. And when I knew I wasn't going to be spraying but driving alot I ran 87 just fine just made sure I ran it way down filled up with the good ( ok as good as I can get) stuff and drove to the track and sprayed it.
Have there been backfires YES
have there been engines let go YES
But if you look at any power adder there are downsides it's all in how you respect it and use it. Plus having a good SAFE tune helps ALOT.

Yes I realize there have been backfires and blown engines, but that's the risk you have to be willing to take with any modification, including forced induction. And of course, I will have the car tuned on the dyno.

I don't quite understand the dyno tune though. Do they just adjust the AF ratio and that's it? Or will they put a tune on a programer that I'll have to use when spraying? Thanks for all the help fellas. Forgive the n0ob :D

anyone?

Can I have the AF adjusted at the dyno and then use a xcal2 to adjust it 4 degrees for a 100 shot?
Yes,all you need is to take one dyno run on a wideband to see where
your A/F ratio is at and than your tuner will adjust as needed. On your
nitrous tune you can retard your timing four degrees and spray a 100hp
shot no problem.

Sorry for all these posts lol. But I noticed that the Walbro 255 fuel pumps are only available for mustangs up to 1997. Can some one please send me a link to the fuel pump that fits 2000 GT models?
FRPP fuel pump will work on your 98 but, I forgot
where to get one? Anyone know where you can fine one?
