No air filter on 1/4 mile run

I seem to recall some tests in the car mags from back in the day (when air filter tech was crap) and it was good for a tiny bit. These days with the cotton gauze elements, I really kinda doubt it would do much.

Will, you don't have the issue that John and I do - we'd suck in sage brush and at times of the year, a pound of pollen if we tried that here. I've even considered going back to paper elements since the gauze can let a too much through..........

Now for John and the other fluid dynamics guys: with no filter element, if one were to run a hose down and out the front, is there any gain from a ram-air type of thing? It seems to me on the old bikes it did make a difference...........

Seems like a few years ago, someone did the cai/air filter directly behind
the headlight thing.

He took off the air filter and light when at the strip
to allow a ram air kind of effect.

I wanna say he reported a gain
or
If talking 1/4 mile times ... loss

I have a friend that did it on his wife's car and it helped a lot. Her GTP had a stock paper type filter in it.... he took it out and gained a few mph and a few tenths.

With a GOOD filter, it could still do wonders if it's DIRTY. LOL

That might have been me. I cut a hole in the black plastic behind the side marker. At the track I removed the side marker. My MAF/Air filter was visible. It was good for a tenth. Let me see if I still have the pictures.

I do remember this actually. If its what I was thinking he even tried removing the hood for better airflow because he tried several different setups.

I remember back i high school i took my S-10 to the track one time. stock intake system. I took out the paper filter and gained 1mph and dropped .1 for the rest of the day.

I've seen this done a lot up at Epping where I go. Some people sneer at it, some people swear by it. I've never done it, but I'm the lazy guy that doesn't take the spare tire out either.

1 - Colder air is denser and atomizes better
2 - Ram air type effect

Seems like it would work to me.

i took all that stuff out, spare, subwoofer, jack and all that **** and didnt notice a diff. idk??

I had to do it the last time I went to the track. I really didn't notice any gains/losses. I attribute my .1 sec gain to not missing 4th gear. lol One thing I did notice was that it had a harder time idling w/o the filter.

I don't think it is worth the risk. Suck in one thing and...not so good.

stock with 205 all season radials I went from 14.9 to 14.8

with gears and larger tires I went from 14.3 to 14.15 removing my K&N air filter.

visibly it didn't look very dirty

Hindsight it was a stupid thing to do, but I was very "E.T. hungry"

I actually have thought about fabbing up a pipe from down low up to the filter............kinda like what JT was elaborating to.........right now I cut the bend in the cai and the filter is in the bay.....................wondering what actual difference it make in the fender or bay..................

Looking at my ACT temps on the Tweecer, on an 80 degree day, in the engine bay temps were over 120, with the filter in the fender they were 80 degrees.

How do you plan on doing this?^^ Remember that the more bends, the worse. Maybe an air route can can redirect cool air from the outside would be cool. You won't be able to box the filter in tho, I assum it would be hard for it to breathe at idle.
