No instrument lights in 68 mustang

Nedd some suggestions please:

I have no instrument lights in my cluster, however the turn signals, wipers and high beam indicator do work. I did check all (10-12?) bulbs when I had the cluster out of the dash and they do illuminate.

I am thinking that it could be the headlight switch (The headlights do turn on) but want to be sure before I spend the $$.

Thanks for any help on this.

check your ground to the instrument panel first

Ground wire

I did check the black ground wire that goes to the metal dash support and it is clean and tight!

Make sure you vary the brightness by turning the light switch while performing the following checks:

Check for power at the Instr Pnl fuse (both sides). If good, look for a broken blue/red wire going to the dash connector.

If no voltage, check the blue/red wire out of the light switch. If good, look for a broken blue/red wire going to the fuse block.

If no power is coming out of the switch, then replace it.

Please let us know the outcome. I have a similar problem- replaced all the bulbs, cleaned the contacts, worked great for a few nights then presto, just stopped working again.

Instrument lights

I have been traveling the past week so have not had a chance to work on the car. I will get to it the next few days and will report back. Thanks for your input.

Instrument Lights

OK, here is an updated on the lack of instrument lights:

The fuse position in the fuse block, that protects the instrument light circuit does not have power which is causing my problem. (My test light indicates no power to the circuit regardless of whether or not the key is on or off) I then put a jumper wire from another fuse position in the block to the "dead" fuse position, and "wella"! the instrument lights now work.

Now then, I am not sure why there is no power to the instrument light fuse position and more importantly, how to get power to this fuse/circuit. Every other fuse position within the fuse block does work correctly!

Any more suggestions??

I believe the headlight switch feeds power to the fuse box on that circuit IIRC, so it's probably the headlight switch.

By the way, I did install a new headlight switch last night, yet still no power to just that one fuse position in the block. All of the other fuse positions are working.

Yikes! Time to break out the test light and wiring diagrams. You're gonna have to trace wires to find where it's broken

I've been doing the same thing with my '88 GT - it's no fun but satisfying when you find the problem.
