No Longer will I Fear The Gear

Well, pretty much the title sums it up. I have decided to go ahead and do a gear swap in my car. At first I wasnt going to do it, but now I have decided to go ahead with it. One question:

What gears do ya'll recommend? The car will be getting cammed over the winter and I am spraying a 100shot to it. Right now the car has 3.23 gears in it, so I refuse to spend the cash on gears to go 3.55. I am really debating on going 4.10's. A friend of mine has a set of 4.30's that he ahs priced to me really cheap, but I just think 4.30's would be a little to low. Any input?

I'm looking at getting gears over the next month myself ... i did a little research, i was originally going to go 3.73 but if i go 4.10's my car will be at roughly at 3k rpm's doing 70 on the highway. Not 100% sure if i want to go a little lower than 4.10, but as of right now i see no reason to stay in the 3._ _

I'd go 3.73's with the cams AND nitrous.

No nitrous, 4.10's.

If you get 4.10's on the spray, you'll likely have to run a 28" tall rear tire or raise your rev limiter a bit to make it down the end of the track.

im on the verge of hitting the limiter on the big end, and for some reason 98 gt's only have a 6000 rpm rev limit? and a damn speed limiter.. but you should be fine, i still would go with 4.10's, just move the limiter up to 6350, or you said you were going to do cams, this would be the perfect time to move up to a beefy spring (no comps plz!) and move that limiter up to about 6700 and you will love the gear and spray combo, i know i love mine!!

If I were you I would go with 3.73's. You aren't going to want to turn your stock bottom end motor very much over 6k rpm on the spray. I am running 4.10's and I use a 27" tall tire, 1" taller than stock, and I am turning almost 6100 rpm at the finish line now on my 125 shot. With 26" tires, your looking at 62-6400 rpm crossing the finish line.

4.30's with nitrous is not even an option, IMO.

For DD I got some 3.73 gears in my GT and I love them shure I coulda got 4.10's but theres no way I want to be at 2200 rpms while on the highway.. Right now at 65mph it hits 1500rpms and I still get good mileage also it improved my city mileage from 17 to around 18.5 to 19. Also the gears are more noticeable from a stop than from a roll just some fyi. Hope my input helps out a little.

I wish I would have got the 4.10's... It's a night and day difference between 3.73's and 4.10's...

but he is also running juice so 4.10's as some of the others have said will top out before the end of the track even with moving the limiter up. 3.73's or 3.90's will work good with the juice and cams.

mod motors love gear. 4.10's or 4.30's work very well. my buddy's blown 03 has a set of 4.10's and it's perfect. it doesn't spin like crazy and it's got power in every gear, even staying out of the boost. definitely not like a blown 5.0 car with gear.

You will not be at 3k at 70mph. I have 4.10s in an automatic and 3k is 80mph for me. At 70mph I'm around 2,600rpm. With a manual your rpms will be even less then mine.

Gears are really pointless without proper traction. 4.10's are a great gear for a 2v that is street driven and hits the track from time to time. 3.73's are not the best gear for the 1/4. You will be shifting the car before you cross the traps(3-4). You will get a little more out of 4.10's, and even more out of 4.30's in terms of ET/RPM at the traps(given you have the 60ft and tire out back)

4.10's and a spare set of stock wheels with some bfg/MT drag radials for the track is a nice setup. Decide where you need/want to shift the car, what you use it for, etc.
