Well....not a good day for me!! I just got "the" call from Evergreen Ford.
"The 4th Cylinder wrist pin is undone and is warping the piston". The price to fix it........Priceless, for everything else there's Mastercard!! No, but seriously it is $6,750.....and that includes the new 4.6 engine and labor.

So, I am going to be out of the Mustang scene for awhile. If anyone wants to buy a bad 4.6 liter for experiment, let me know!! I will have one laying around here very soon.

$7k is getting raped. No way can that motor cost that much to fix. I know 4.6L's are a little more expensive to work on, but that's obscene... get a second opinion from a different shop.

Take it it a shop, but never Ford... Unless you have a warranty, I think metal and not plastic is covered under a warranty right?

Get a second opinion, or sell it and get a newer one.

The only reason I took it to Ford is cause I had my buddies dad tell me what he thinks at his shop. I just wanted to make sure he was right.....and he was!!!

I am thinking of getting a stroker engine put in. We are going to do it ourselves, so this oughtta be a learning experience!!!

FRPP is selling complete '01 Cobra engines with exhaust and wiring harness. After install labor it would still be less than what they quoted you.

Sorry to hear about the motor and holly crap they going to give out free lube when they bend you over on the replacement? Good luck on the stroker. Sounds like you will save a bunch of cash and come back stronger than ever.

Well I will know for sure by November on the engine. I get my bonus in November and it will easily cover the cost of an engine, so that's what I am waiting for. As for engines....I know it is going to be at LEAST 302 cubic inches. I have my eyes on a 347ci. engine......

If anyone can give me good engine places (where to buy an engine from)? I have looked at Coast High Performance and a couple other places. So far I am talking with the guys at Coast. If anyone has a better place please let me know!! Thanks in advance.

Well I'm running a D.S.S. shortblock, not problems so far, however I dont' thinik that they filed the rings properly, but it is a strong S.B. I'd recommend them. so... research and go for the company that fits you best I guess.

go w/ that 5.0L replacement engine that Summit Racing sells... it's only $3500, and all you need is the MAF and TB to go w/ it... then, you'll have the power, and the torque of a true 5.0L mustang engine

Uh, go with a '99 and up engine. The '01 cobra would be an easy swap if you bought the crate engine.

Getting a pre-'99 engine requires a LOT more work than you know, especially the pre-'96 5.0L models (which are the same as the 347s you want). There is a lot of different stuff in the setup, including the wire harness, hookups, etc. Pre-'99 cars have return-style fuel system, distributor coil pack instead of coil-on-plug ignition, etc. Just all stuff that will make extra headaches with the install. Just buy a cobra crate motor and call it done. It'll make more horsepower than a 4.6L 2v stroker anyway.

I wouldn't take it to Ford, either. They'll charge a lot for everything and not necessary a good job, either.

the 5.0 I meant was the DOHC version, basically a ported, bored out 4.6.
FRPP sells them for less than 6 grand I think

No, the 5.0L bored out version of the DOHC are all very expensive, regardless of where you get them from because the machining required to fit 3.700 bore sleeves is REALLY extensive. You basically remove the entire cylinder bore area from side to side and put in big siamese sided sleeves. Not fun.

The 5.0L Cammer engine, if thats what you're referring to, is like $10k+. Cool engine for naturally aspirated stuff because it's got pretty good heads (though worse than cobra/mach heads) and a good intake and valvetrain (FR500 stuff), but it's way more than $6k. The '01 Cobra and Mach engines are about $6000.

I would buy a Mach engine because it's basically an '01 cobra with better heads and cams (though the latter isn't much different).

I would NOT, I repeat NOT, buy anything SHM. Their race blocks are cool, but I wouldn't buy any engine from them. That's just me personally. You can get better for cheaper.
