How Much Noise Without Muffler?

Hey guys.

Today/Tonight I began work on what I thought was going to be a straight up catalytic converter replacement. What it turned out to be was pretty much a total rehaul of my exhaust with all new pipes and everything. Tonight I only got as far as installing the new cat and a two foot section after that, so it's just cut off about two feet from my back wheels with no muffler. All I can say that this is really, really loud! I'm a teenager and am supposed to like loud exhausts, but this really does over do it.

My question is that once I finish hooking up the exhaust all the way to the back ( I will be using the stock tail pipe if i can) will that help quiet this thing down to a more reasonable level. Right now it's so loud, and when I really hit it, my car literally shakes. I have read about how some of you have either not put on mufflers or cats, and I would just like to know what I should be expecting sound wise once I finishg going all the way back without a muffler. Or should I just go ahead and buy one?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

The thing is that I was originally not planning on putting a mufler in. I was just wondering how much quieter it would be with the rest of the tail pipe hooked up. Hopefully, I will be able to finish without a muffler today and see how that goes as to whether I put one on or not.

I would go with a muffler. I know when the pipe between the 2nd cat and muffler split in my car I went deaf driving home. Not literally - but It wasn't enjoyable...and if you like to listen to music it would have to be so loud you would end up deaf anyways.

I never heard it from the outside so I don't know how it sounded really but most people say that a loud exhaust doesn't work out for a 4cyl.

The shacking is from a thing called "reverberation". It's the exhaust pulses bouncing between the ground and the bottom of the car. Once it goes clear out the back of the car, the shacking will quite. It will be quieter INSIDE the car but it will be just as loud outside the car. I'd suggest you put on a flowmaster 40 series muffler. They are only like 35 bux on ebay.

Hey,

Thanks for all the advice. I finished no muffler and it is as you said less shaking but still really loud. I'm going to drive it around for a while and more than likely end up getting a muffler becuase this is a little too loud for me.

Thanks again.
