No Power to Coil

I had my car die along the road last fall. It was acting up; missing etc, for some time before that. I just figured the PIP went bad so i just got done installing a new one to get the car out this spring. The car still wont fire.

I checked the gray coil plug and i do not have any power to the coil. I checked both wires to the battery ground and nothing; this is with the key in the forward position. I have fuel pressure on my gage.

What could be the cause of no power to the coil?

thanks

Matt

Could be the TFI module. You can have it tested at most auto parts stores.
You can also check for injector pulsing using a noid light. If there is no injector pulsing there is still likely a problem with the PIP.
Lastly, this is probably not the case, but have a look at fuse #18 (20A) in the under-dash fuse box to see if it might have blown.

I have the feeling something was lost in translation. Taking you literally:

If you are not getting key-on power to the coil, I'd start chasing it backwards - you have key-on constant power to the coil (via the EEC relay, IIRC). For diagnostics, you can run a fused jumper wire from another point in the circuit to see if the coil works properly thereafter. If it does, either run a new wire permanently or start opening harnesses to find the open in the 12 volt supply.

Good luck.

UPDATE

I figured i would post an update to help others diagnose a similar problem.

I checked the #18 fuse and it was blown. THinking i had an easy fix, i just replaced it and saw a big spark and blew the newly installed fuse. I unplugged the TFI module and replaced the fuse and it didnt blow. I plugged it (TFI) back in and it blew again. I took the TFI module to get checked and it was fried. I installed a new unit and it fired right up!

thanks for all the help.

Nice to see you on here again Matt. I talk about your car all the time and your dyno graph has been posted here more times than I can count. You need to stop being a lurker! I'm glad to hear you got it fixed though as I too was drawing a blank as I had it pegged as the PIP.
