no smog pump + stock H pipe = problems?

Long story short, my smog pump is squealing and I want to bypass it with a short belt to get rid of the noise. I would rather do this than replace it because I have to pass emmissions later this year. After I pass emissions this time all that crap is coming off, offroad stuff going on, etc.... Will bypassing my smog pump cause a problem with the cats like over heating or anything?

you can't get rid of the smog pump with those cats...

I removed my smog tube from my stock cats and drove like that a couple days then I started getting huge problems (car was choking itself till it wouldn't run).. the cats need teh fresh air pumped in to feed the combustion process in the cats. Either get rid of the 3 way cats or you gotta keep the air pump...

Now I am sure you can get an airpump from someone or a boneyard cheap enough...

Yeah, I wouldn't to it. I have a bbk o/r h-pipe if you would like to buy it. I used it for about a year. Probably my favorite mod so far. I had a perma-smile for weeks when I put it on.

i can relate. i finally felt like a mustang owner. nice, rumbly and loud.


i'm not sure how emissions work for you guys (i live in canada) but why would you want to remove all you emission stuff? dont you have to get tested every year or something? it would be a pain to keep putting it in and taking it off

Everyone says you cant do that, but i hvae had my car like that since september and have not had one problem. Its not an ideal situation, and im not sure if you could pass emissions, but it wont hurt to run it like that for a few thousand miles. i have put almost 15,000 on mine with it like that.

I don't have to get tested in michigan. Only a few states are strict.

The lack of additional oxygen (no A.I.R. pump, but still have cats) can cause the cats to fail prematurely.

Some, if not most, new aftermarket cats don't require it. My X-pipe didn't even have a provision for it.

True, but he said he has the stock h-pipe not an aftermarket. The stock h-pipe definitely requires the catalyst (air) for the catalytic converters or they can clog and literally choke a car. Heck I hooked up my smog pump again when I removed my o\r h-pipe and put a new BBK catted h-pipe on just to be safe. Catted pipes are too much money to take a gamble on IMO.

I wasnt saying that i recommended it, but just that with my experience you can do it for a limited time without major driveability problems. If i wasnt at school my o/r x-pipe would already be on.
