I also have a minor noise from under there somewhere. My Ford service manager buddy said it may be the cam syncronizer. Because the noise has not progressed into anything scary, I'll change the idler pulley first. I'm thinking it will be much cheaper and easier!

here's some cheap techniques that might help you, only and only if you have a really really long screwdriver put it on various non-moving parts. Put it up to your ear and listen for noise. A stethascope is prefered but the screwdriver does work. Last week i thought my motor was dead, it was making a dreadful knocking chattering noises, i found out using a 2 foot screwdriver that my idler gear went bad. i put a new one and that cured it. make sure your diagnosis of the problem is correct... don't spend money on stuff you don't need. double and triple check and have other people give their two cents. good luck, troony

Does it sounds like a rock rattling in a coke can? If so, you may have rod knock, which is not good. Try to pin point where the noise is coming from. If the knocking gets louder/fast when you accerlate, its probably rod knock. Get a compression test done and make sure the cylinders have good pressure. You could also hook up an oil pressure gauge and make sure the engine has adequate oil pressure. Metal shavings in the oil might also indicate rod knock or a spun bearing.
