Noisy throw out or pilot bearing

For about the past month I've been getting a metalic chattering/squeaking noise under the car when my foot is off the gas. It goes away as soon as I depress the clutch so I'm thinking the problem is likely a throw out or pilot bearing. Is this just another squeak to deal with in 99+ GT's (no harm being done) or is this an indication of problems yet to come? I'm coming up on the end of my warranty so if it needs to be fixed, now is the time. Thanks for the advice.

Sound like your clutch is packing up for a vacation. My GT did that for a while then my clutch blew out, it took a long time but that's what happened. My Centerforce is doing that again too, I went through two Centerforces...I'll never buy a Centerforce again!

just about every mustang does this..... Ford has NO CLUE how to make a good TOB!!! You can do the broken record cure on this and spray the white lith. grease, or try to get warranty if at all possible!!!!!!!!!

It is your throw out bearing. Mine stock one did it, and so does the one that came with my SPEC clutch. It will not harm anything. It is just an annoying noise to deal with. The biggest problem is that it is not easy to fix. You have to basically remove the transmission to replace it. I tried the white lithium grease and it made the squeeking go away for about a week. Then it was back again. It does seeem to make less noise as the temperature warms up. I am glad summer is coming because it was noise as heck during the winter.

If you do put a new one in, it is a good idea to set your clutch cable so that the bearing is not engaged when the clutch is engaged. This helps to minimize the loading forces on the bearing, and from what I have read this is the only solution that seems to help minimize problems with the bearing.

My factor unit did it and now my new McCleod is doing it. I thought about installing a firewall adjuster/quadrant. Will this help reduce noise?

Like everyone else said. It's a normal 5-speed stang thing. Best thing to do is replace the bearing, but might as well do the whole clutch since your going that far.

Check out www.ddperformance.com They have a nice T/O bearing for 19 bucks I think. I bought it when I replaced my clutch last March I believe and I have been squeak/squeal free for over 20,000 miles!! (knock on wood). If you do decide to change your t/o bearing, get a pilot bearing also while you have it apart.

So glad I found this thread! You guys rock! I was sitting here thinking my SN 95 was on the brink of a catastrophic failure, but, now I feel a bit better. She is only doing the chirp intermittently at this point, and it stops when clutch is pushed to floor. Also, when I rev it in neutral. No issues yet with shifting or gear selection. You'd think that Ford would produce a better quality transmission and clutch assembly. I LOVE MUSTANGS but I hate these bearings.
