Just saying Hi since I just registered. A little about myself. I drive a Mazda6 so i'm sorta a Ford guy but i'm currently saving up for a Mustang GT and have some questions. I have owned an LT1 Z28 and LS1 Z28 (I know :nono: ) in the past and did some modding to the LS1 but i'm totally in the dark when it comes to the 4.6 GT. I would like to get an auto (yes, the wife will be driving it too) and have read thru the forums for a while and am confused. With a LS1 automatic, the first and best mod you get is a stall converter. I had one in my old Z and it really woke it up. But what i'm noticing here is that its not so popular a mod in the Mustang world. Is the auto tranny problematic already and a higher stall would just cause more trouble? Other mods planned would be exhaust, intake, pulley and other simple bolt-ons. If you have any suggestions feel free to tell me. :SNSign:

That's a really good startup mod list. If I were you, I'd add gears to the list :)

Just know that they Motive gears are the exact same as the FRPP. I wish I would have known this when I got mine.

The install will run you anywhere from $300 and up. Don't forget to get a new rear-end seal kit while you're at it!

We all look forward to having you as a loyal :SNSign: member! Don't be ashamed of your past...it'll only help your future ;)

OK I have read quite a bit in the past few days. I don't think my eyes can handle much more. ;) I still can't find a whole lot of info on stall converters though. There were a few write ups on them here and there but if someone could point me in the right direction, i'd be one happy camper. Thanks.

Thanks for the help everyone. The car would be a 99 - 04 GT so I guess 3.27 it is. I had a PI converter in my otherr car and loved it so i'm thinking a 3000 stall would suffice. Couldn't be that loose with a 4.10 mated to it.

Sweet, I never knew that.

What exactly is a stall converter for anyways?

I'm bad with explaining so I cut/paste this from another website.

The torque converter converts hydraulic pressure within an automatic transmission to mechanical torque, which drives the drive shafts and, ultimately, the wheels of your car. In design, the torque converter is similar to a turbine engine. Fluid is forced under pressure through small passages called fins. These passages vary in size and flip flop in direction. As fluid is forced through the passages (which get smaller in size) a strong, almost solid “fluid coupling” is created. This is what drives the driveshafts and wheels.

I was quoted $2500 for a new trans with a 3800 stall capable of handling 1000+whp, trans cooler, and install for everything from www.bc-automotive.com

He did my jmod for $150.

Have you driven a car with that high a stall before? I know some people that drive a 4200 stall on the street but i'd be weary of driving anything higher than a 3000 for everyday driving unless I had some good $$$ thrown into internals.

4.10s and an xcal2 should be your first mods.
I disagree...

I think mods should go in this order:
1) shifter
2) quad/fw adjuster
3) new dampers
4) some exhaust stuff
5) new tires
6) gears
7) livewire with custom dyno tune

This starts off cheap and easy and works up to expensive and cannot do without a technician's help.
