Ok, My kid wrecked my 68 Mercury Monterey two days ago. Rear ended a Nissan. The Nissan came out better than the Merc did. The front cap on the Merc is toast. I can't find parts or parts cars anywhere near here. If anybody out there knows of parts for it or a parts car, please let me know. Need the front cap ( the part ahead of the hood) , the grill, and front bumper. I already have both headlight bezels and both turnsignal assemblies are OK.

Bummer!

Can you post a pic for reference? I plan on hitting some Pick-your-Parts this weekend.

Also, is there a Ford front-end that looks similar and is acceptable in case the Merc is impossible to find?

I never have been able to post pics here. Can email them though. The 68 Monterey 2 door Fastback is basically the same car as the Galaxie fastback of the same year. Just minor differences in the sheet metal, front and rear styling. Lots of their parts will interchange, excepting the body parts. Looked closely at a Galaxie fastback last night, but the sheet metal in the fenders is different and wouldn't match up, to swap front ends

Woods? Y'all have woods up there? I'd be willing to bet there's at least one or two stashed up there in the Panhandle. Did you ever take a road trip back east on US 70 to check out the old cars? Specifically the 63 Galaxie 2 door ( black with the "thunderbird" emblems on the fenders) that's sitting in a front yard just before you get into Vernon ? Got to have a 390,406 or 427 in it

D Hearne: My son and I once parted a '68 Mecury Cyclone (fastback) which I believe is the same body as the one you describe. We took the 390 and junked the rest as it was wasted. I'll watch for another up here in Washington. If you get enough people looking in different parts of the country........... Good luck!

bnickel------- I got canned from my drivin job back in september, and have decided to stay close to home from now on. My kid's 18 now and only has 1 more year of High School, so the wife told me I'd better stay here, or else We're currently about to take in two of my niece's kids in a foster care program, so for the forseeable future, my over the road days are over. Gonna miss seeking out old cars and gettin paid for it.

D.Herne; OK, we're tallking about the "big" Merc for '68. Are any of the parts you need specific to the fastback or would any other full size '68 Merc do? Would you consider a complete car or only the parts that you need?

I realize that shipping or transport would be an issue from Washington. If yours is a nice car, it would be a possibility worth considering.

At this point, I do NOT have any leads.

D.Heare: A source that I have used is: Johnson Specialty Automotive (Ford, Lincoln and Mercury parts) Woodenville, WA 425/232-8231 (Scott Johnson). If he has what you want, I'd be glad to check it out for you before you commit.

Thanks Dave. Yea the Monterey is the big merc any of the other full size Mercs from that year will also have the same front end parts, from the doors forward. I think a parts car shipped from there might be too much but I'm willing to consider it. Just priced a 68 Galaxie from Eugene Or. to South Louisiana and it was going to run $700-800. Mine does need other rust and minor body repair, but otherwise hadn't been wrecked til now. It's only got 63K miles on it. I've seen 2-3 others like it on ebay, and even with starting bids of $1000-1500 they didn't sell. And these were just as nice or nicer than mine is. I'll call JSA on Monday and check them out. Thanks again for the help. I'll be glad to do the same for you if you ever need anything.

I know of a mercury guy about an hour north of me. he deals mostly with cougars but he might have a lead on something.

there is also a classic junkyard a couple of miles away from me. I have seen what I thought was galaxies, but I can check it out for you.

I hope you're not talking about Red's Cat house. I've done business with him once before and he's a first rate A-hole. I'd appreciate any help Hungrymonkey, I was beginning to think you'd left us here, it's been awhile.

its west coast classic cougar. I know he has a poop load of cougars, but i didnt get a chance to wander through the yard.

which years interchange with a 68? I have found a bunch of 68 cars, but they are about the same price that you paid for yours.

oh, and the sun beam place is in Oklohoma. Its kind of close to you.

The 68 Montereys are year specific as far as the front and rear styling. None others interchange as far as that goes. Other parts in the chassis are the same as the galaxies. The glass is the same as the Galaxies as far as I can tell. I also need the rear window trim at the bottom, it should also be the same as the fastback Galaxie
