Notches

Went to my paint supplier today to show the salespeople my notchback that i painted last year. They look it over and the one guy goes:

Something is missing! I say, what do you mean? He says, From the back, isn't there a.....and he motions with his hand....I say, oh yeah, this is a notchback, you must be used to the hatchbacks which were more popular back in the day. He says, oh yeah...that's what it is a trunk style.....Cool, wow, I haven't seen one of these in years!!!

It made me feel good, because the guy knows about cars, just maybe lost touch on them for a while, but it was cool that he knew that this particular Mustang was different than most of the ones still around!!!! It also made me feel good, that the decision I made of taking on this old peice of junk it once was and turning it into what it is now was the right decision! I put this project off for 6 months, then started and finished it in 2!

Does anybody else get that feeling that your car is almost a classic when you are driving around town??? I mean, I like driving the notch more than the Cobra!! Hate to say it, but its true!!

I always get the "Yeah, my buddy used to have one of those" or "I had one years ago, I should have never gotten rid of it".

I actually get excited when I happen to see one and wave like an idiot.

I wave at people in mustangs all the time. Usually takes me about 3-4 seconds after to realize that im in my truck and not driving my stang.

I always get stares from younger guys and gals who I believe have no clue as to what it is

I pulled up to park at a walking trail and this group of 16 year olds with their honduhs were just staring like crazy. Then they started talking amongst themselves... Yeah... They wanted it LOL

And EVERYWHERE I go someone says "You wanna sell it?"

I get that all the time!! I can't drive down my street without someone asking me that....every stop light, every cruise, every car show, while I'm at work...everywhere.

Yeah, I got the "ya wanna sell it?" question all the time ... EXCEPT FOR WHEN I WAS ACTUALLY TRYING TO SELL IT!

Oh well. Their loss. I'm lovin' the ol' beat-up beast for now. Just can't wait until I can afford to pick up some kinda cheap-o daily driver (Geo Metro or some crapbox) so I can get a bit more serious with mods on the notch - DR's in back, better suspension, take all the daily-driving junk out of it, etc.

i get looks from everyone, for the noise more so. The other day dropping my car off for paint, youd think it was something exotic. Nearly 100 people flocked over when I started it up to back it out of the shop for them to move cars around. When I pulled it back in the people were waiting, and after I heard 3 or 4 mention how the car sounds insane. To me it doesnt sound great yet, tons of exhaust leaks and no tailpipes, but I guess others dont know that! Feels good thinking you got something special!

Notches are a little more common up here in Canuckistan. In a lot of States, while the cars were being used as police cars, you couldn't buy them. You could always buy them up here.

My buddy has some good stories about driving to Florida in his notch before they were available down there. I think he spent more time pulled over than anything else.

My first fox was a 90 coupe.....this girl that I waas trying to hook up with at the time (now my wife) says "oh cool you have a Mustang? I love Mustangs... I want to see it!"

So I walk her out to the parking lot and she says "OH..........is that a real mustang?" I was heart broken because she was dead serious!

My car confuses people........

Them: cool Mustang.

Me: this is no Mustang...

Them: yes it is.

Me: no it's not. *pulls registration out of glove box*

Them: no way.

Me: ummmmmmmm, check the VIN on the dash.

Them: holy ****. It's a Chevy?

Me: No, mercury Capri. Not Caprice. Stangs and Capris are interchangeable.

Them: Oh, cool Capri.

Me: Thanks.

Boring, but, it's my life. I'm going to miss that when I convert it back.

Good luck finding the Capri-specific body pieces ... especially the bubble-shaped rear hatch window. (Not trying to discourage at all, but it sounds like a heckuva challenge.)

I'll wave to other 'Stangers, but the ones in newer cars gotta wave first - mostly they are secretaries, etc. who don't know their even driving a Mustang, or what they're all about.

Naw, you could always buy them here. Notches outsold hatches in many earlier years. Thing was, they were usually grandma cars back in the day - 2.3 w/auto, V6 cars, etc. Ford tricked most of us go-fast people into buying the more expensive GTs. But we're getting smarter now

I wanted a notch but they were all too expensive or were 4 cylinders. Someday I will have one. That or a Ttopped 4 eye hatchback. A Ttopped 4 eyed notch would be the ultimate though. THE ULTIMATE.

I love the look I get at car shows, when I bring out my before and after frame..Nobody believes it is the same car. I purposly left the under side that ugly burgandy....so I can say "Look underneath". Then they are like "Wow, I never knew that could be done to a car." Gotta love the restored notches....NEVER SAY DIE!!!! You always gotta keep them going.
