I figured id post this here since some of you might own one. The CEL is on in my DD (98 mercury mystique), the local shop wants $40 i think to scan the codes. Id like to just buy a scanner so I have it but walmart, advanced auto, sears etc all sell pretty much the same scanner wich is around $80. Anyway, is there somewhere to get one cheaper that will do everything i need it too, since i will only be using it once in awhile (hopefully).

Well, if you want to save money from the shop, and from buying a scanner, Autozone and Advance Auto pull and read codes for free. Very handy, and you realize how much some shops will rip you off.

I asked the kid and advanced and he said they didnt . Maybe ill try auto zone, i guess it would be worth the 20 min drive.

Whatever you do though, don't let the AZ guys give you advice on how to fix whatever code you are throwing.

Bring the code to us, and surely someone can help you out

Well i took it to auto zone, the code is P0420, something about the cats not operating efficiently. I guess their getting clogged or something. It has 126k so that wouldnt be out of the question. Any other insight?

Looked up the code in more depth.

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Seems like a few things can cause this, I guess ill have it reset and see if it comes back. Is there some why to reset it without the scanner or do i need to go back to autozone? Im also going to check under the car later to make sure nothing is damaged.
