octane and oil thoughts..

ok i have a bone stock 05 gt with 15000 miles not sure what type of oil is in it now i plan and changing it soon and also i'm not sure what octane to run some of my friends say 87 is fine since i don't have a tune but im not so sure.. i have seen a pretty close race on these forums over royal purple which i have used before and mobil 1.. which would be better to use with the car having 15000 miles already??

Did you buy this from a dealership or individual? Was it changed with synthetic or synthetic blend (like most fords from dealerships) Royal Purple or Amsoil are great synthetic's.

To answer your octane question, there is not any benefit to using anything other than 87 octane in a stock mustang.

I don't know how you use your car. In "normal" use, the Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend with a regular Motorcraft filter should be fine. Change the oil every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.

i did purchase it from a dealership and i am a fan of royal purple so ill try that with the motorcraft filter.. as far as the other responses go i plan on modding it but i will run 87 now since its stock.. although i do have a heavy foot under "normal" driving! thanks for the imput.. another quick question though if i were to say want a cai a tune and a mid pipe/aggresive muffler set up anyone know what combo would make the best power for my money?

I have a really HEAVY foot.. I use full Synthetic 5w-30 Mobile 1 and with a matching Oil Filter. Then I use some Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer.

i hear that these cars are really decieving.. its so smooth throughout the power range you look down and think your at highway speed but your doing 120mph lol

HAHAHA wait till u get some mods ...With my intake and tune BEFORE my exhaust yeh...100+ all the time without evening noticing !

got any ideas on some reasonable mods.. i have some money but not alot i was trying to go with a cai, a tuner, an aggresive midpipe/muffler, and a short throw shiffter... and yes the shifter is gonna be my first upgrade!

Shifter,... then of course intake and tuner ! Best bang for your buck.. I love mine ! Then if your undecided on the combo for exhaust here is the thread sticky.. scroll down a little there is over 200 sound combos for you to waste a day at work watching !

Why do you use 5W-30, when Ford specifies 5W-20?

I have no idea...just always used it ... I never really checked the manual to see what was "recomended" .. none the less whats the REAL differnce.?

Nothing, other than risking damage to your engine because the oil has too much viscosity when hot.

i run royal purple 5w20 synthetic, with the ford racing oil filter. from what i've read the ford racing oil filter is a little taller then the normal motorcraft.

as for what octane fuel to run, i have always run 93 in the car. i'm going to try 91 next tank.

i have the ford racing drag pack, and it specifies use 91 octane or better. see if i get any more performance running 91.

Yes, because some of the old oil remains in the old filter.

i think im gonna run the royal purple 5w 20 and ford racing filter and 89 octane until i get my cai and tuner. Thanks for the imput everyone!

Any synthetic 5W-20 will be an excellent choice. I recommend Pennzoil Platinum, Quaker State Q Synth, or any over-the-counter synthetic 5W-20. Mobil 1 used to be a true Group IV/PAO synthetic basestock, but ever since some gas chromatography tests revealed the use of Group III (highly refined dino oil) synthetic base stock it has confirmed my suspicions that Exxon Mobil is now playing on the marketing hype of "synthetic". For engine oil, I recommend over-the-counter "synthetic" because it is affordable and you can safely conduct 6000-7000 mile oil change intervals with most brands without worrying about engine damage. Audi and BMW specify 10k mile oil change intervals (regardless of time) with their oils and engines.

There's nothing wrong with Group III base stocks other than when they are priced as Group IV oils.

For drivetrain stuff like gearboxes, transmissions, and differentials, I recommend Redline and Royal Purple. They have a great reputation for making excellent products at decent prices without resorting to multi-level marketing/pyramid schemes like Amsoil.

For fuel, I recommend a quality 87 octane fuel. Find high volume gas stations that a lot of people frequent. Costco and Sam's Club are such locations, and Meijer if you have them in your area (I forgot to check your location). I find that sticking to a high volume gas station is more important than brand or if it is a "Top Tier" gasoline.

If you get a tune, you may want to use 93 octane but I would recommend sticking to 87 octane tunes to allow more flexibility and to reduce your operating costs.
