odd number stamped on my block

Looks like LY656537 and it is on the machined flat surface at the rear of the inlet manifold just above the gearbox. Is it a ford engine number? It is a 1989 302 block from a lincoln but built to 1993 cobra spec. It doesn't look like a VIN but is it?

That is a partial VIN (last eight characters).

L = 1990 model year
Y = Wixom, MI assembly plant
656537 = 56,537th 1990 Lincoln assigned a VIN at Wixom

thanks, is there a reason why it is not the 656537th? in other words does the first 6 mean anything?

Lincoln and Mercury passenger cars start at 600001. Ford passenger cars start at 100001.

Yes, not many people know but Ford does put a partial VIN on the engine block
