odd tech question.

ok so my friend and i got a stupid idea for a project for this winter (i know its august but i'm canadian so the car will get parked in a few months lol) anyways, we are probably going to throw a carb on the car to see how it runs.. and how much weight we can ditch from the car by doing so...

so a list of parts would be much appreciated from all you tech gurus, this is my first fulie car so i'm not 100% sure as to what can come off, or be used or whatever.. also one thing we couldnt figure out was since the car has no dist, we couldnt adjust the timing.. so would we have to leave the computer hooked up or buy a timing adjuster or what??

i realize that a few of you are probably going to think this is a retarded idea, but i'm just curious as to how well it will work, and if it does work it will be way cheaper then upgrading all the fulie crapola, plus it will look damn cool.. and if it runs like butt, then we can just put the car back together stock

also the car is an auto, so do i need to leave the computer in the car for any of the tranny stuff, or is it a seperate computer??

oh yeah its really easy, I did it to my car and with the carbureator I now run 9's and I have dynoed it at 800rwhp

I don't know about converting the 4.6 mod motor to a carb. Sounds pretty tough. Why not buy a Crate engine that's carb'ed instead? The engine swap would probably be less painful!

Your first sentence nailed it, "ok so my friend and i got a stupid idea". This isn't as easy as you think. There are so many things that would need to be changed I can't even begin to list 1/2 of em and I don't know the other half.
First off, forget the high tech computer crap and fuel delivery issues - what intake manifold would you be using?

there is a carb intake, sorry but i forget who makes it, i'll break out the old mm&ff in the next day or two and let you guys know, but there is such a thing.

i realize that converting to a carb will be a pain, but personally i think that it would be a cool looking animal, an overhead cam carbd v8, and it will be much cheaper than buying all of the efi crap(hopefully) so thats why i'm checking this out. and honestly i hate having injectors, fuel rails,maf, throttle body, etc etc.. i much prefer just a simple carb and thats it, would loose so much crap in the engine bay so if we could start a list that would be fantastic.

seriously i think it is next to impossible, you would be better off just doing an engine swap with a carbureated engine. I am definately no expert but I think there are better ways to gain horsepower.

I guess I still don't get it. What are you comparing this to when you say, "it will be much cheaper than buying all of the efi crap"? What do you have to buy and why? To make more power than stock? You think you're gonna make more power with a carb with less money?
It's not the fuel system that is restricting your ability to make more power. If anything, it's your heads. Why do you feel you have to replace the injectors, rails, MAF (let's not even go there), TB ?
I'm sure this would be a cool looking animal, but unless you have more time and money than common sense, I'd rethink your plans.
Was this manifold you saw in the magazine for a street car or an all out race car?
Sorry man, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but this idea makes no sense.

Im going to have to agree with the fact that you will spend more money on this "stupid idea" than you think. It would prolly be cheaper to buy a very nice crate motor than to do what you are talking about. I mean, think about it, you could have a 351 for cheaper than the fact that you could say hey guys, I spend so much time and effort on my 281 just to make it carburated. Im sorry, and dont let us stop you, but I think once you got about half way into this project, youd be looking for a way out of it. Just too much too do.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else, this sounds like a 3 a.m. drunken idea. I think that the gain,if any ,that you could possibly get from going carbed would in no way justify the work put into it.Why don't you buy another stang minus engine and put a crate motor in it.As for weight reduction, what exactly do you think you are getting rid of?Why not just gut the interior if you want it to weigh less?I don't know how it would be cheaper seeing that in order to make it faster, you are still going to have to change other parts on the car besides the intake.It would probably be less cluttered, but the money and time spent doing this isn't worth it IMO.Take the money that you were putting towards this project and build your car during the winter. Personally, I think it is a huge waste of time and you are going to devalue the car dramatically.I would rather have the reliablility of EFI any day over a carb.my .02
