My Miata and my wife's 5.0 do the same thing.
If I miss a powershift from 2nd to 3rd and head toward 5th, the trans gets stuck in a region between 3rd and 5th which acts like neutral. I have to pull it out and then put it into a gear. After, both shift like normal with no obvious damage.
What happens?
