Sorry for all the posts tonight... but Im wondering if the 4.6 takes 5 or 6 quarts of oil..?

The owners manual says 5 quarts, but someone on here and MustangWorld.com's tech page said it takes 6 quarts.

I havnt had a chance to check it since I changed it today, but I put in 5 quarts... so what should it be?

You put in 5 quarts then check the dipper. If it the level goes past the MIN mark, you are good to go.

It's better for the engine if you slightly underfill than slightly overfill.

When I checked the oil it was halfway between "min" and "max"... I got a little worried about that. Is it ideal to have it at or RIGHT below the "max" level?

I plan on checking tomarrow morning after its all settled, but I must say... these dipsticks outright SUCK! Mine is all twisty, and has to be turned around 180* when putting it back it so it will slide all the way down.

I think the 99-00 take 5 qts. while the rest of the years take 6 qts. You should be good to go if there is oil in between the lines on the dipstick.

You are fine as is. Just check the dipper occasionally and top it off as needed, unless you're certain that your car burns no oil.

My 00 Gt 5spd takes 5 quarts. 5 quart jug of synthetic Mobil 1 5w-30 from wallmart + motorcraft filter for around 30 bux

Bless Wallmart lol.

BTW- my dipstick is all twisty too..why the hell did ford do that? And can we put a "flat" dipstick in there from a different year GT? I have NEVER seen any car with a twisted dipstick like that. And yet my GT has one lol. WTF

I think that halfway might be the "sweet spot", the best place to be.

Well I checked it today and its right near the "full" line, and it only took 5 quarts.

I bought 6 just in case, but I have an extra now I guess.

I dont know why it costs you guys 30 bucks though...? I got 6 quarts of synthetic Motorcraft oil and a Purolator filter for around 17 bucks.

The Motorcraft oil you got is probably a synthetic blend.

Its def 5 quarts for a 2000 GT, i just did mine today, almost perfectly in the middle of the min/max. I used the motorcraft 5w-30 sythetic blend, and the motorcraft filter, and got it all for around 20 bucks.

I thought the mod motors needed to be upto the max line or you wouldnt be getting sufficient oil to the cams.

oh and I also read that the dipstick thatch marks are not correct on the 02 GT's?

You're right, the dipsticks on our cars are nowhere near accurate. Which means you need to follow the manual's recommendations, check the dipstick immediately after an oil change, and the oil level you see will be the new FULL mark.

Ford says 96-02 5qts, 03-04 6qts. Does it make any sense, no.

5qts was barely reading on the dipstick. 5.5 was above the full mark. go figure.
