Oil capacity... two different answers.

So to answer the origanal question - Go by the owners manual 5 qts. Don't believe the dipstick but make a reference to where 5qts brings the level up to. Maybe make a scratch mark for the new FULL line.

Overfilling is not really an issue with OHC motors since they hold alot of oil in the top of the motor. I run 6.5 quarts in my Cobra, .5 more than recomended because mod motors have issues with oil draining back into the pan. I'd say if you are running any less than 6 quarts you are running dangerously low. You are asking for a spun bearing running that low. Roush has done tests with mod motors and has found that most of the oil does not drain back into the pan at high rpms.

Damn. Well if you dont always spin your engine up to high RPMs would there be an issue with too much oil in the bottom end? I understand the above if you are racing, but what about normal driving?

Was Roush doing the test with SOHC or DOHC engines?

Someone may know for sure but isn't there a tsb on the dipsticks there was a thread awhile back about this I think.

My FORD original manual for my '98 4.6L GT says, and I quote,

Engine Oil: Motorcraft Motor Oil 5w-30 Super Premium
Vehicle Type: 4.6L (2V)
Capacity: 6.0 qts

... AND when I do my oil changes, it takes EXACTLY 6 qts. But that's a '98.

I wouldn't make claims about any other year.

Keep in mind that your capacity might vary a bit based on the size of filter you have on there. If you have the Motorcraft, that's a bigger filter than most and will hold more oil. If you have the piece 'o crap Fram, well, take if off immediately and get a Motorcraft...

Finally dug my Owners manual out of the closet. Oil Capacity for 2002 GT including changing the oil filter is 6.0 quarts.

There are also numerous occasions where manuals can have typos/errors too. This obviously isn't the best thing to have an error on but anybody who is a professional in some area and reads a manual about their line of work will be able to point out TONS of errors. This is probably another case of "someone hit the wrong button" or something...Or maybe Fords just stupid...BTW my 96GT takes 6 quarts.

this is ridiculous that there is such an important part of maintaining the cars and no one, including piece of ***** ford knows thae right answer.

unbelievable!!!!!!! that this even is tolerated by us as owners. anyway, i called 3 different ford dealers and asked and got 3 different answers.

the problem seems to be the 2002 gt. all you 98 under guys have nothing to worry about. your manual says 6 and thats what you put in and it is perfect.

2002 gt have been rumored to have wrong dipstick markings, wrong printed amounts in the manuals, and ford dealers have no damn idea. how the hell is anyone supposed to know what the hell to put in there.

i put 6 qts. in and it was way over max on the crappy dipstick, but who knows maybe the dipstick is wrong and thats how much oil i need. i took some out and it went down to the max line. that is where i left it, but maybe it is now underfilled because the markings are wrong.......fckin bull *****.

yea i know exactly how you feel!!

I have a 2002 explorer 4.6L with my 99 gt pan on it so I'm completely freakin lost! I went to fordparts.com and looked up an oil pan and it says the oil pan is the same from 96-04??? yet we have all these different recommendations. I just changed my oil yesterday and my 99 manual says 5qts so I put 5qts in and it's about alittle over 3/4 on the dipstick, so if the pan is the same from 96-04 then why the hell all the inconsistencies???

My 00 gt manual says 5 quarts,my father 04 grand marquis (4.6L 2V) says 6 quarts......

Ok I just checked the service manual for a few years and found the 2001+ cars take 6 quarts with new filter and the 2000 and earlier cars take 5 quarts..

BTW do not trust the dipstick on our cars. it's not that accurate.

Mass confusion...

I put 5 quarts in my 00 GT. Reads right on the full line on the dipstick. My freind SWEARS by putting 6 quarts in his 99 GT, and says 5 isnt right. I dont know if it is overfilled on his dipstick or what... but, hey im confused as ***** and sure as hell dont want to be underfilling my engine with oil. I really hope its 5 quarts.

I know my 4L Jeep takes 6 quarts, and its a 6 cylinder. I guess its kinda weird to go up .6L in displacment and 2 cylinders and use a quart less. Oh well.
