Oil filter magnets

I've seen some of these "oil filter magnets" around. They are a flat magnet piece that you place on your oil filter. It is suppost to help trap metal particles and fragments in your oil filter and keep them there by the "magnetic pull". When you change your oil filter, the metal particles go with it. Anyone ever try these ? They look pretty nice, I might try one.

Wouldn't waste my money on it. Any quality filter that you put on your car will take care of anything that will cause damage. Just think about how many cars don't have these and have plenty of miles on them. If you're engine is putting that much iron into the oil for the magnets to make any difference, then your engine is shot anyway.

For an older motor with more wear I think it would be more effective. If it is not expensive why not try it though? Like the other guy said that is what the filters anyway, but at least you know the magnetic particles are on the magnet rather than circulating through the engine if you do use one.

I think I'll try one and I'll let you guys know how my oil changes go. I use Mobil 1 oil w/ Mobil synthetic oil filter. I guess the magnet will be the cherry on top. Thanks for the replies.

Where did you see the oil filter magnet? I was also looking for a magnetic drain plug. Any suggestions? Also, what size is the drain plug on a 99 GT? Is it metric (15mm) or standard (1/2")?

Your oil filter already traps what a magnet would attract to itself. Most oil filters only trap between the 20 to 40 micron range but a magnet won't be of much extra help.

The engine builders I've talked to recommend an oil filter magnet and magnetic drain plug. It's a little extra protection for not a lot of money.

Forget a magnet for the oil plug or filter...what we need is something to collect all the fragged-off metal in the Tremec transmission. I can only imagine what that soup looks like. With all the daily grinding of synchros and gears it must be like one of those Christmas snow globes all shook up. My 2¢.

Here's just a couple of places I've visited frequently.
Filtermag seems to be a very good product, I've never used one but it looks good and sturdy.

The oil filter magnet I seen was pretty big. Looked large enough to wrap around your entire oil filter. It was wide too. It was 42 bucks at a local performance shop. Bit expensive but for its size and since its a one time investment, might be worth it. They are strong too. Had to use both my hands to sepereate the magnets from each other on the shelf. Couldnt just do it with my fingertips.

I'm thinking, I wonder if you could add a bunch of these to your oil and transmission pans. Then, when you drop the pan out, you can clean all the metal particles trapped on it ?

In my 99 Dakota R/T, there was a round magnet attached to the bottom (inside) of the transmission pan. When the tranny gave out, that magnet was about 3 times the original size just from all the metal **** stuck to it.

Most transmissions have this. They put a little metal magnet in there to trap all the metal. You clean it whenever you drop the pan.
