Well after a couple of days of tinkering here is the finished product. Since my upper/lower intake install I have had issues with oil basically flooding the upper from my pcv, and it covering the back 2 plugs with oil. Im talking about having to add half a quart or so every 500 mile bad. After talking with a few guys on here via pm, I decided to yank the upper and replumb the pcv lines. I installed a new pcv valve, new screen, new line from the upper all the way through, installed a Amflo Inline air filter (to act like a catch can), and an Advance Auto see through fuel filter. I mounted it all around the ac line that runs behind the upper.

Basically now the air/oil mix goes through the pcv, into the air filter/catch can, into the fuel filter to separate out any leftover oil/air/condensation mix, and finally into the upper intake.

I did a pretty ok job on it I think. I would have liked to find a way to mount the stuff without using zip ties, but I didnt feel like drilling any holes around the fire wall ect...

Looks pretty "factory" looking to me, and if you dont know what your looking for then most people would probably overlook it.

I drove her about 30 mins this am, and had zero smoke on acceleration. Ill know if its really working as the week progresses.

Thanks to those of you guys I pmed about this pcv issue, your insight helped me piece this badboy together.

Im actually doing a write up for this install, and my Cobra upper/lower install. After Im finished with them Ill pm a mod or 2 to see if I could get them put up as tech articles. Figured Ive been on this site since '02 I think, I can give something back.
There is a tech article on doing this for a 4.6, but not on a 5.0. Plus I did the catch can/extra filter. The 4.6 article only covers one of these methods.
If I cant post them as tech articles here, I can shoot it to you by pm or email if you want.

I hope it works for ya, just me but i would cut the ends off the zipties. It does look like a pretty good install though.

Nice. What is the filter media in the air filter you chose to use? A few of us have had issues with pneumatic air/oil separator elements clogging (I removed my element and just run an empty cannister as a catch-can of sorts).

I am curious to know what your filter media is, and if you can, provide feedback in a month or so on how the media is holding up.

Honestly I can not find anywhere on the insert what kind of filter it is. The insert shows a complete breakdown of the Pneumatic Air Filter, but it does not state exactly what the filter is. It simple states it as an element that acts as a particulate filter and absorber. It does state it can be used to separate out oil though.

I popped the hood after the first 30 min drive, and noticed the can was bone dry. There was a little bubble of oil that had made its way into the fuel filter, but that was it. My worry is that the filter may be to small of a micron filter for the oil to pass through like your saying. Ill know more as time goes by. I may end up removing it like you stated and just used the polycarb bowl as a catch can. I will update as I know more.

Be sure to come back and let us know how it works for you.

I've tried similar setups, and I'm trying to work out the bugs on an evacuation system now.
If the fuel filter is too restrictive, then you will most likely blow the dipstick out of the tube or blow a seal somewhere.

How could the filter be too restrictive not to let air through? If it gets clogged I can see your point, but if its made to let a liquid flow through, I dont think air would pose a problem. Im under the hood of that car at least once a week messing around, so I dont forsee letting it get to clogged for pressure to build up that bad.

Looks good man, how much it cost ya, i might just have to go that route, damn PCV valve is pissing me off. Is that like some fuel line or emission hose you used for the plumbing?

Fuel has the advantage of pressure. How big is the ID of the inlet to the filter? If it is sufficient then it shouldn't be a problem.

It may not be an issue, and I hope its not. But if you find that all of a sudden you have a leak at the back of the lower intake manifold, you may have an idea to work with as to why.
Don't ask me how I know this can happen.

Looks like it'll be hard to get something under there to drain it based on where it's mounted. My '04 has a way bigger looking place underneath, but I still can barely wedge half a styrofome cup under it to get the oil out.

Total, I was looking at around $65-70 counting a new gasket since I removed the upper, and a new pcv valve/screen. If your gentle with things (not my strongpoint) you could probably do this without taking off the upper.
The air filter bowl was right at $20, the Mr Gasket see through filter was ~$16, and it was ~$5 for the 4ft of 3/8 fuel line.

Looks like it'll be hard to get something under there to drain it based on where it's mounted

The good thing about this filter bowl is that you can unscrew it from the black base. The entire bowl will unscrew so I do not need to rely on the little drain at the bottom. Solved my mounting problem really quickly!

How big is the ID of the inlet to the filter?

Everything is 3/8 all the way through except for the outlet of the fuel filter. That I made 5/16 so the hose can slip on and off fairly easily so I can change the element when needed. Hence the clamp on that side.

update

Well I decided to pop the hood and see if anything was being caught in the can after my trip to work yesterday. Sure enough there was! There was a lot more than I thought, but I guess it just shows how badly the pcv is pulling it out of the engine. I took this pic this am...

There is around 80-90 miles on the car from the last few days of driving with this installed. There is about 3/4" of oil in the catch can. Guess this will be a regular routine of dumping this thing every 4-5 days.

The fuel filter is doing a good job of catching any vapor that gets by as well. All in all Im very happy with how the setup is working here in the early days. My worry is just why is the pcv sucking oil so freaking badly! Looking at the can, its no wonder I was having to put half a quart in every 5-600 miles.

Any ideas on why my pcv system is running full steam ahead???

Many people report this problem after upgrading the intake system. I am not sure what the base cause is though.

Well its been about a month and a half since the install. I am happy to report that I have seen no smoke under normal driving conditions, and only a small puff under full acceleration. We did slap her on the dyno a few weeks ago and at about 110-130mph she started puffing pretty hard, but thats been the extent of the smoke out.

The only problem Ive had happend a couple days ago. For some reason I could not disconnect the bowl/catch can. The screw top was freaking sealed on. I had to diconnect the setup and run it under some HOT water and beat on the edges to get it to break loose. I did take the filter out of the catch can/bowl yesterday as well. I had no issues with blockages, I am just curious if I will accumulate oil any faster without that filter.

I was initially worried about how quickly the bowl was filling, but its been a month and a half, and I have yet to reach a half a quart of oil thats come out.

Here is a write up on the install I did. I hope it helps someone else out if they decide to do this. If for some reason the pics do not work let me know.

Heres the write up...

Well nevermind. The write up is to large to post with the pics. It will only let me post a 78.1KB doc, and this one is 968KB lol. If anyone wants this I can pm/email it to you. I asked several mods if I could post this as a write up, but no one emailed me back. Oh well, if anyone wants it, I will gladly email it to you!

Quick question. If your catch can has a drain on the bottom of it, why don't you guys just run a line from there back into your oil pan above the level of the oil like you would do with a turbocharger.

Except if there be a pressure differential between the intake and the crankcase it could make the whole thing worthless/worse.

There isn't though. Oil drains from the lifter valley into the crankcase, since pcv pulls air from the lifter valley, it is also therefore pulling air from the crankcase. When it comes to drawing air, to add a line directly to the crankcase from the oilpan would be redundant.

But in this case, it would be there for the purpose of draining oil, not drawing air.
