Hey all, my stock automatic transmission just recently went out on my 90 gt. I can still barely drive it. It chugs and starts out reeeaal slow, so i took it down to a local shop. The mechanic said it was f***ed.

For $2500 I can have him throw in a brand new Ford automatic transmission.

Another option would be to have a local guy rebuild my tranny with an aggresive shift kit for 1500 to 1600. He would take it out rebuild it and put it back in. Sound good?

When it comes down to Transmissions, I know nothing. I'm not familiar with different brands. Who makes a good sport transmission. I plans for the future are you modify my engine and give it some good horse power. I don't want to have to go back and redo the tranny to accomodate the horse power. I'd rather just get it down now.

So if you were me what would you do? I'm defently open to ideas of ordering a tranny out of a magazine. What auto transmissions will be able to endure some abuse that a modified 5.0 might give it?

Also, I would imagine it would be difficult to do a Auto to Manual conversion. Have people done this? How difficult is the conversion?

Sorry for all the questions, just need a little advice. Thanks, John.

Good lord!...they better through in some vaseline with those kits cause it sounds like you are getting screwed! We paid 800 to have one of our autos rebuilt..Hell I only paid $800 for a built TH400 with a 3500 stahl for my S-10.

I would shop around a little bit and see what other kind of prices you can come up with.

Its not to bad to swap to a manual. You will need flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, tranny, shifter, shifter console and boot, and clutch pedal assembly.. Sounds like a lot but its really not.

I will shop around, I also thought 1500 was a bit much.

Smoke, you paid 800 and the mechanic took it out rebuilt it and threw it back in all for 800?

I'm sure they sell manual conversion kits that would have all of the following in it right? "flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, tranny, shifter, shifter console and boot, and clutch pedal assembly."

cheaper to do a whole T5 swap, or just get a used AOD with low mileage and install it yourself.

Conversion to a manual transmisson can be done with regular hand tools I assume? Is there any cutting of the floor board involved?

Also, I know this is a dumb question but i just have to make sure. AOD means Automatic Over Drive?

Anyone know of good conversion kits (that is if they make them).

yeah, it is just basic tools, no cutting the floor, and aod does stand for automatic overdrive

the people at www.bieberfever.com make a really nice kit
