Ok,this isnt "5.0" tech..but it Ford big block

skip the 390-427-428... old technology.. 429-460 will kill them in HP.. a stock 429-460 block will handle 800HP with no prob, 4-bolt conversion will boost that to 1200.. and a stock block will handle up to 557 cubes :nice:

429-460 blocks are all over, they still make the 460, and the cheap early heads can handle 700HP with some port work..

and there's a reason a 460 won the PHR engine masters challenge.. :cheers: over all the others

So by this line of logic we shouldn't bother building 5.0's or 5.0 based engine's because the modular engine's are all over and the modular bloack can handle more power than the 5.0 block. The 5.0 is old technology. Almost as old as the FE actually. The 429/460 is actually younger than the basic architecture ofhte 239, er I mean 289, er I mean 302, er I mean 5.0.

FE came out in '58 I think
Small Windsor came out in '62 or '63
385 Big Block came out in '69
 
I just looked at an FE board...FE's scare me now.

Lol,all I could find was miles of part numbers and people saying how you dont know what they are.Because it seem that one part number could end up being like four differant block configuerations....

My 357 is looking like a better possability now.I dont know,I would still like a big block FE,but its alot more complicated than a Windor or Cleveland or even the 385 series.
 
460's are cheap and easy to find. They can take a good bit of hp.

Police interceptor heads are a decent factory head for a hot rod. For a serious drag motor, you need a real head.

a 460 out of a truck with a carb, intake and headers will make that falcon run 12's with traction. Possibly 11's.

What are your goals.

Alcohol is about .4-.5 quicker. You need twice as much and twice the fuel system of a gasoline motor. Also need more oil changes because the blowby turns oil to mayo.
16:1+ for an alky motor.

dont start this crap here. Cubes make power. Dont even try to compare a nascar prepped 289 to a 1974 smog choked station wagon 460. Hp=torquexrpm/5252.

ONLY bad things about a BB are size and weight. if not turning corners, this can be compensated for by moving the engine farther back in a drag chassis.
 
My vote would be for the 429-460.

Here's my personal experience:

1969 Fastback
stock internalled junkyard 1971 429 with 100K mile($300)
Weiand Stealth intake($180)
Total Performance headers($500)
stock C6($50)
3.50 gears with Detroit Locker($550)
Ran 12.70's all day on street tires :banana:
11.60's with a 150 shot spinning hard :D

Boy, do I miss that car! :damnit:
 
Not at all trying to start a dispute but how much does a 429/460 weigh? This is a sincere question and I am sorry for stealing the thread. My resources weigh the 428cj in at 625 lbs. w/cast iron intake and the 428 PI at 560lbs. w/aluminum intake. The lightest weight I can find for the 385 series is 640 lbs. but some references to a 720 lbs version?!? Does that sound right? Somebody please set me strait for my own knowledge. Thank you.

my 466, cheap to build, block and crank handles a lottttttttttt of HP stock, NA great power, lots of speed parts available, i believe it costed me around $5000 to build the engine and swap it into the stang. Getting ready to step out of the small block world and play with the big boys :)

Just finished plumbing the braided SS fuel lines tonight, and last week got the 68 heads ready to rock with guide plates, springs and a good exhaust port and polish job. The weak link on these engines are the exhaust ports.

Ok I know must of this,but just answer me this....which motor will be the easiest to get in the car?

I tell you what,looking under the hood there ain't much room for a bigger motor,hence lots of cuting and welding Im sure :bang: .

Any big block will require at least modifiying the spring towers.

Headman Headers makes nice 351W swap headers in both shorty style and long tube. I think Hooker makes them as well and I think Doug Thorly makes them too.

No it doesn't did everyone just like skip over my post, im almost done with this swap, it fits right in there with the correct motor mounts and headers.

FYI, this is not my car, just someone i talk to on other forums

Actauly I dont know if Im gonna be doing the car.The mustang still needs the cage finished and could use another paint job.I dont know,Ill have to see how busy we get with the stang.

But if I do get the car,I think Ill see if a 385 series will fit in there.The FE can make power,but from what I have read are expensive and confusing (to me atleast).
