Looking to do some Old School speed tricks to my stock 5.O I have cold air intake, headers and full exhaust, Ford Racing UD pulleys, A/C and Smog Delete and PA 95 amp alternator. Workign on intake now. I really like look of the stock intake. I have heard of people using a larger throttle body like 70-75mm on the stock upper intake and laying the gasket over the flange and markign it with a marker then griding the opening out to get better airflow. Will this actually net any increase in HP or torque? Would I be better of just getting a Cobra intake? Also, any other Old School Speed tricks?
Thanks!

I'm guessing that you are looking for old school because you are on a budget, correct?

Try the explorer 5.0 intake, they can be had very cheap and are similar to the cobra and gt40.

Throttle body on a stock intake is pretty much worthless.

Budget really isn't the issue here. I like the looks of the stock intake. I was wanting to do more the bolt-on route like my friends did back in the 80's. They did some crazy stuff with stock parts as far as modifying them. I am sure most of it didn't help though! Will the stock hood still work with the explorer intake?

Even after home ported the stock Intake the HP gain is not going to be that much. Go with the Explorer GT40 style Intake/Heads and you will have a wolf among the sheeps.

Contact member TMoss. He will professionally port your lower intake to flow as well as a GT-40/Cobra. It's a huge seat-of-the-pants improvement and is good for about 20 rwhp.

The resriction in the intake manifold is the lower intake. So, you have two options. Either have tmoss port the lower manifold for you (or find someone selling a used unit), or pick up an explorer intake for 75-100 and have a good cheap manifold.

The explorer intake is a member of the gt40 intake family, but still looks similar to stock.

That's a little bit of a stretch.
Tmoss's own site says the intake is only worth 10-15hp.

I can only speak from personal experience.

He's done two intakes for me. The GT-40 on my 'vert (HCI car) "only" picked up 6 peak rwhp, but it was an across the board improvement with a gain of 20hp at 4400 rpm over the unported intake.

He also did my Saleen, which is completely stock. It picked up 19 peak rwhp, again with an across the board improvement at all engine speeds.

These numbers are from a Dynojet, if that matters to you.

I really can't recommend Tom's services enough. His porting of a stock intake makes the car MUCH more fun to drive and lets it breathe a lot better.

I welded/ported my own lower intake (as well as ported my own E7TE's). Wasn't hard....just be consistent and concentrate on straitening those runners.

Can’t really say how much it helped, or didn’t help. I never did a before and after dyno and did all of the engine work to the car prior to driving it the first time.

I will say, it used to move pretty well. I was never beat by another bolt on Fox body and I was 1/10 off the time of a guy running a 125-shot at the track on his stock GT if that says anything. Think I ran a best of 8.9X in the 1/8 with a 2.3 60ft time. Not too shabby?

That being said, if I could do it all over again today, I wouldn't piss around with the stock stuff. I'd just start saving for something that really breathes. You're only going to go so fast on stock parts.

Back in the days when I still had my stock intake, I ported the lower section and also ported the heads (E7's) at the same time. The result was a 0.32 sec improvement in the 1/4 mile ET. I'm sure the results would have been even better if Tmoss had done the port job but he's 7,000 miles away from me.
I didn't dyno the car at the time but acceleration felt stronger across the whole rpm range. Definitely worth doing if you're on a small budget and trying to make the most of the stock parts.

I have a ported stock upper and lower intake on my '88. The runners look like D's instead of ovals now. I have a 65mm tb mounted on it. Under that the rest of the engine is bone stock.

I have other typical bolt ons ,headers, cold air kit, electric fans, xpipe, Flowmaster exhaust, ect, ect.

Last time on the dyno it made 239rwhp/298rwtq.

Not bad for an engine that is and looks basically stock.

Yeah, those are very healthy numbers for a 5.0 with stock H/C/I. The beauty of these simple mods is that you get a nice boost of the torque curve right across the rpm range and you don't lose driveability either. Makes the car fun to drive, especially if you shave some weight off and have a 3.73 in the rear.
Can you post your dyno sheet?

the most I have seen is 280/295RWHP with a ported stock HO intake, Buddy Rawls custom cam and CNC Powerheads ported E7 heads, long tubes, 65mm TB, 76mm MAF. The 280 was with a stock length upper and the 295 was with a 2" shortened upper intake.

What's the most you've seen on a GT40/Explorer/Cobra intake car (302/306 bottom end)?

Ive done some interesting mods on a stock upper. definate gains from 3500-5000 but did not raise the powerband like I anticipated, made more power though. this was on a heavily ported stock lower and pretty much stock longblock, full exhaust. it was alot of work but looked stock when I was done
