Let's just say I'm havin' a bad day

I'm swapping a '04 GT motor into my '96 GT. I need the timing cover off the '96.

Pulling the '96's harmonic balancer I broke the #(@%* thing and now all I have is a little "nub" of a harmonic balancer wedged on the crank blocking me from taking off the timing cover.

What the heck do I do????

I think he is asking how he will get the nub off... Are you saying go borrow some kind of tool from those store you mention? That might work. Perhaps if he gets a variety of pullers he can find one that will grab onto it and pull it off. I still think he should heat it up to assist in removing it.

Hey Guys,

I couldn't use a torch at all 'cause the ALUMINUM timing cover is about 1/4" behind the harmonic balancer "nub".

I ended up taking a grinder & using it like a cut-off tool & took a bunch of lengthwise sliced into the "nub" until it was small enough to pull the timing cover off.

Thank God!

Yes, you can borrow tools for specific jobs from parts stores........is what I was referring to. Nice late response, eh?

Hey Mogs, What do you need a picture of & from who?

& Squares..... somebody told me I needed to swap the timing cover 'cause of accessories being different, but honestly I never looked??? Regardless, the '04 engine's timing cover was cracked pretty bad in about 4 places from the wreck that car was in anyway, so I had no choice. Makes me think though.... I'll have to look at the '04 one & compare.

And for anyone else doing this swap that wonders about exhaust manifold interchange. It "looks" like the '04 manifolds would work except the driver's side exhaust flange studs on mine had a "shoulder" that may have interfered with bolting up my '96 exhaust. I saw some header website that mentioned the same problem on some (but not all) of the later GT's & you need to just change two of the studs.

that timing cover may have the pads for the tensioner in the wrong place. I think 96-99 same and some 99 are different.
