On-Going Fuse Problem

I have been blowing this same fuse for a year now and I can't figure out what is wrong. I had to put 2 in just today. It is a 15A fuse (9) and when it blows, my turn signals don't work along with my brake lights. The wierd thing is when I look in my owners manual, I find out that these two things aren't on the same fuse:

-Turn signal Lamps
-Back-up lamps
-Airbag module
-DRL module
-Overdrive cancel
-Brake shift solenoid
-Heated backlite relay coil
-Convert. top relay coil
-Illum. entry module (shut off)

9 15A
-Hazard warning
-Stoplamps
-Brake shift interlock sol.


I have checked the sidemarker wires which look fine along with making sure the correct bulbs are in, which they weren't at first (stupid bodyshop) but it still blows after having the correct ones. I then thought maybe it was the turn signal switch on the steering column, but I don't know for sure and it costs like $60. If I don't use the turn signals all day with a good fuse in and then go to use it, it is sometimes blown. So maybe something with my brakes is blowing it instead of the turn signals. What exactly is a brake shift solenoid???

If anyone can figure this out I would appreciate it more than you could possibly imagine. I just can't take it anymore.

Fuse 1 is only hot in run and supplies the turn signals.

Fuse 9 is hot all the time and feeds the hazards and brake lights. There's also a signal to the PCM and speed control amplifier from the brake switch.

The most likely cause is a faulty flasher. After that it's bulbs and sockets.

Your brake solenoid is your ABS braking system if your car is equipted with it. Fuse 9 is only feeding a signal off of your brake switch to the anti-lock brake control module. It's very unlikely your problem is here.

It just doesn't make since to me how the flasher could be causing this. Why would the fuse blow when I don't even use the blinkers then?? Could it be something with the brake switch?? And no I don't have ABS.

see if the fuse will blow with the flasher out.

if it does, then check the speed control(if equiped),Multi Funtion Switch, the brake lights(don't forget the 3rd light) and check the wiring for a short.

1 Question: have you ever removed your center console?

i am willing to bet this is it. I did the same thing for about a month and finally figured it out. I had removed one of the little plastic push things off of the center console switch wire cluster, so everytime i put the brake down a little too far, it would short the fuse b/c it had pierced the outer wire casing but hadn't severed the wire since the brake doesn't go all the way metal on metal, it leaves a little room, enought to splice into a wire

hope it's this, b/c it's a really easy fix (of course you'll feel like an idiot like i did after fixing an obvious mistake)

I did put a foglight switch in. I just had to plug it in, but I could check on this.

UPDATE:

I removed the flasher and the fuse blew on the way home from the track on wed. I think the next thing I need to do is take the switch assembly out and test that. It give directions in the haynes manual. I really don't have anymore ideas except I haven't changed the rear lights yet.

there is a real possibility that you have a short between the two systems. you should check your fuse block where both of the fuses are and look behind it to see if there are any exposed wires. throwing parts at an electrical issue is very rarely successful. you mentioned the car just got out of the body shop. what was replaced?

No, it got out of the body shop a year ago. The fuse problem started a bit after that. The only things that were replaced were one headlight, fender, headlight mounting panel, hood.. I really think it was just a coincidence. I have looked at most of the headlights and sidemarker wires and they look fine. I got ahold of the shop (ford dealership) and they said to drop it off one day and they could figure it out, but I never did that for some reason. What could they do that I couldn't do though?

So you're saying look at the wires going into the back of the fuse box in the car??

By the way, I was out tonight and had to replace it 3 times.

there is a real possibility the wiring harness was pinched somewhere and is rubbing together causing a short to ground or to power somewhere. being the problem started after major repairs is a good sign your problem is related. i would take it back and see if they can figure it out.

i wish someone knew the solution to this, cause i'm getting tired of sticking my hand out the window to make a turn + i'm not as safe with my airbags unable to deploy.
