Its that time.... she's about ready for a rebuild, 156k on the ticker. I'm looking to spend about 5k-7k on a rebuild, labor included (i'm neither technically inclined nor have the tools to do such a project). It will be almost strictly street driven but i'd like to see 350+ at the rear wheels, more if possible. I'll prob need to rebuild the transmission as well, or replace it which I would like to factor into that 5k-7k cost if at all possible. Any ideas as far as what kind of build would be possible for that money? (i'm thinking either 331 stroker or forged 306 prepped for a blower, but want more ideas!) Thanks for the insight!

Either one of those options done right... not even including a trans... with labor.... is going to be more then the amount your willing to spend.... Hell even just in parts...if your considering the blower.

Labor is going to kill you. I'd try to find someone local, on local message boards, who wants to help and make a few bucks. My first "engine pull" was done at a local guys house...he didnt do much work, but he was there to give me tips when i was stuck/confused/doing something wrong.

Anyway...

Trans- $2,000(maybe less if u find one used)
Shortb- Figure atleast $1,000 for a rotating assembly, $1,000 in machine/assembly work

Thats 4,000 already and you havent touched new cylinder heads, intake, injectors, MAF, TB, clutch, and a tune (plus gaskets and other BS that adds up)

Is there something wrong with the motor? If not, i'd get a trans now. Then save up another year to do a motor next winter.

The only way i really see u staying inside of your goals and $ limit, is to rebuild your shortblock and use the same heads/intake (maybe a new cam)....and throw nitrous on it to get the power u want.

I plan on keeping the heads and intake, just gonna port and polish them I think. I wasn't saying i'd get a blower now, just possibly get the motor ready for one (i.e. forged internals) sorry if that was confusing. Think I should rebuild my t-5 or look into getting a TKO or something for that kind of power? There isn't anything wrong with the motor right now that I know of, I'm just trying to be prepared Thanks for the input, keep it coming

You wont make 350 to the ground with stock heads no matter what you do to them. If you add a blower it can be done.
