Opinions on HEI on 68 302

im building a 1968 block 302 for my 85 RX-7. im trying to keep the engine set-up somewhat old school so i figured i would ask you guys

what are your thoughts on using an HEI distributor on a non roller older 302?

It's a good ignition system and definitely works great. Only problem is bulkiness, so make sure you take that into account. Might need a certain air cleaner or space it up pretty high. Also, it won't work with some intakes.

spend money rather for ignition box or a good dinner

The HEI looks retarded on a Ford. The distributor as a whole is bigger than the carb. Money's better spent on a module to replace the points and a hotter coil.

i do not have the original distributor.

the DUI ignition looks out of place on a ford, but has the advantage of a one wire hook up. personally i prefer a dura spark dist, hooked to a chrysler ignition box. the wiring is simple, and the box is available just about everywhere, and a reliable set up.

Your local parts house sells reman points & Duraspark distributors for $55 with a core to exchange. Doesn't have to be the exact core either.
