I called one of the local welding shops to price out how much it would cost to have my subframe connectors installed, and the quoted price floored me. The guy said $240 to weld them in. Is this guy smoking crack or is that a normal price. Let me know what you guys think.

Reminds me of the time I wanted to have flowmasters welded on (I prefer welds). They made me wait 1/2 hour, put the car up on the lift, quoted $300. I said only one thing and left: "Bring the car down." They thought they had a sucker and they was wrong.

$150 is reasonable.

I have a guy i go to that did my exhaust, if it has to do with exhaust or emission equipment he will do it for 25 an hour and he usually does it under an hour, He also does random weld stuff for me. Find someone who likes your car and if you can go in person, its way easier to tell someone XXX.XX amount on the phone then it is face to face. He also does random weld stuff for me :

My little brother is a cert. welder and he owed me a favor so he did mine for free, only big problem was, he was out of gas so had to use fluxcore . There is a local guy that does them cheap and is VERY good...he installed my 02 bungs and does a lot of fab work.

Might want to check around and see if anyone in the hobby does things on the side like this.

Lol, I was quoted $400 by a local performance shop, because my subframes have dents from jack stands. I personally would take your $240 deal and get it done, as I dont know anyone else around me with a welder... Maybe you can find a better deal in your area though.

i just looked last week and was told from 250 to 300 i was like WTH and the guy said u have to make sure its right so i asked him if i bolt them on before i bring it to you how much he said from 50 to 80 so thats what i am doing.

What's wrong with Flux-core?? I repair welded my torque box in my 87 with it and welded it completely back up in the car, just have to prep good.

Nothing is really wrong with flux core, it is just not as clean as with a tank hooked up. You do have to clean up a bit more before you can paint over the welds.

By big problem, we had to swap out the wire as he knew he was low on gas but thought there would be enough gas to do the job. So it just made a 20-30min job take twice the time. We set everything up then had to stop and reload then get going again. Doing it in a 1 car garage made things tight and it kind of sucked.

Took me 2 hours to do mine. That is after the car was in the air on jack stands but it includes prep and welding (I welded them myself and learned as I did it). So a shop should be 2+/- hours of labor.

Save your $240, plus about another $100, and buy your own 90 amp box. Flux core is a little messier, but if that's all you know, it's pretty easy to work, and you don't have to deal with the bottles. Then you can do all your own welding.

I'm using a 90 amp flux core on all my body and structural work on my 67, plus anything else I need it for. You'd be amazed how often you can use a welder when you have one in the garage!
