Overheating after gauge install

I just put an autometer water temp gauge on my 1995 mustang i just unhooked the old wire and put on a new sensor and a new gauge. Do i need my old sender wire to tell the fan when to kick on. Because now the fans wont kick on. and it overheated. or is there a different, temp sensor for the fans????

The OEM gauge has a sender on the driver's side of the lower intake. This is for the gauge only.

The EEC uses the ECT sensor on the passenger side of the engine. This is what is used to inform the EEC of your coolant temps. If you disconnected the ECT, the fan should run on low speed whenever the key is on.

well i went and unplugged the ect sensor and turned the key on and nothing happend. the fan fuses are both good. any ideas where to go next.

Test the wiring at the ECT. You should see one wire with 5 volts with the key on. The other wire will have a voltage reading that changes with respect to coolant temp.

Be sure the EDF-monitor fuse in the underhood fusebox didn't blow as well.

For the fan-side of things, here is a tech note about testing the CCRM inputs/outputs. The EDF and HEDF portions are what you'd be interested in.

well got the fan working, and dont really know what i did. Unhooked it to check the voltage and they were all fine. so i plugged it back in and now it works just fine, kicks on at 208 and slowly drops to about 190 then turns back off keeps the car nice and cool. Thanks but now i think i messed something up when it got hot. its running really bad at high rpms so i have no idea whats going on. thanks for the help though
