thats too hot on the stock gauge. but id get an aftermarket one and check it out. just drive it around normally and see if the it heats up on the highway or in stop and go traffic, that will tell you what the problem is more than likely

When I did my H/C/I, I threw in a 70.00 PepBoys 2 core radiator and a new thermostat. Did you properly burp the cooling system and change the oil a few times? The day after I did my motor, the oil pump died and the motor almost blew up. Check your coolant level, and try to get a new radiator. You may have disturbed all the gunk in your current one and clogged it.

since the h/c/i ive drained the coolent twice, and the oil once, but i plan to do both again later this week.. i'll give a new radiator a try.. it cant hurt.. and if that doesnt help i'll keep going from there.. i plan on getting new guages soon, but i had never seen the temp guage go so high and it got me pretty nervous.. thanks for the suggestions

I had this problem last week. I just did a full flush, back flush on my car this weekend. I also installed a new thermostat and housing. and now the car stays at 180* no matter how I drive it. You might try doing that, so you dont have to spend all the money on a new radiator right now.

Yeah, you might have damaged the sender for the stock gauge, it might have been a gas pocket, it could be alot of things. If you have the cash, I'd go for a 3 core radiator, but if not, a stock size 2 core will be fine. Oil should be changed immediately after the first run of the motor, then again after a day or two, then you can go back to regular changes. That way, any loosened gunk and metal shavings are removed from the motor. Definitely get some AutoMeter gauges, after laying a bunch of money into the motor, it's worth the three or four hundred to really keep a good eye on your engine. I just got a full AutoMeter Phantom setup myself.
