Check out some of the shops work though. If a half-assed shop is charging this much...then run. But most of the good shops I know near me....well $5K would be a middle of the road job.

I think it's more because of the sun. The sun eats everything alive here. Dark colored paints don't last worth a chit . been here long enough to know. It's just so damned hot 3/4 of the year, then you got the absolute rainy season , with the extreme humid nights.

Yeah well and people drive like ass hats all over too . And... how many times some dip **** at the grocery store done and banged/scratched up your car from either a stupid cart or their sorry ass backing in to yours? Yeah..

$2500 is about right. $700 or so for a mid level Maaco job. $4k - $6k for a high end paint job (those are usually the ones with the multi colored heavy metallics ).

That's cuz you just put a $10k paint job on yours.

$5k seems a little high if you're talking about a repair/collision shop doing it. At a restoration shop, like Jesse (MAC'n89Blckstng) works at, $5k would be about normal. But you can expect a better paint job for your money.

Of course, bodywork adds significantly to any paint job. If you have dents and scratches and other issues, you can easily get to $5k at a repair shop too.

The question of $5k being a good deal really depends on how much work your car needs, who's doing it, and what your goals are for the car.

Hope this helps!

Cliff

Exactly, the price about doubles if you have to take it to metal at my shop. The amount of work is insane. That 82 we have about 120+ hours just in body work. That doesn't include taking the car apart or anything like that. I did a GTO and start to finish it took about 300 work hours to do. Also, if a shop is doing the R&I work on a car that also brings the price up. Alot of the shops in my area are around 85 an hour and another shop is 110 an hour. Thats why paint jobs in this area are so damn expensive. But like everyone says, you get what you pay for!

When I did my 02 vette, it took me about 400 hours, 39 days averaging about 10 hrs a day, on day 40 I put the door panels, mirrors, and door sill plates back on. Then less than an hour later I was off to the car show in Ocean City.

That took me longer than it would probably have taken you. That was the first time I ever took a vette apart. Plus I'm sure I take longer to do the prep work, cuz I'm still learning. It took me a full 12 hrs to do the actual shooting. It was a two-tone kandy fade, HOK tangerine front & HOK Apple rear.

I wouldn't consider doing that paint job for a customer for less than $10k. It was a chit load of work, but man was it beautiful.

why do you want to take ot to metal? when i was doing paint and body work, the shop charged 40 hrs for painting one. and then if it needed body work that was added to the price. here in my area for a good job you looking at 3k with could paint and clear.

Yep, got lots of pics.

I forgot to mention, the orange and red kandies were shot over a flip-flop base that changed from orange to green, my own personal blend of HOK. The whole car changed tones within the red & orange because of the changing base color, but it was subtle.

From some angles the panels looked a little miss-matched in color, but you could move two inches and not see it. Shooting kandies in pieces is a big no-no. I didn't want any tape lines and the jams had to fade too. Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and do what ya gotta do to achieve the results your looking for.

Sorry, but the side shots are sometimes hard to see the fade. My camera had a hard time with the orange and red. The front and rear pics are definitely better with the colors.
