Hello, I recently purchased a 01 cobra convertible. I wanted to spice it up a little, so I was going to put a Roush body kit on it.
My only concern is that the car is laser tinted red. As far as I understand, they paint the car with an orangish red color, then use a tinted clearcoat to deepen the color up (I think?).

Is it possible for any body shop to correctly match the paint on a car with tinted clearcoat? I ask this, because I can tell the rear bumper has been painted, and it looks like they just used a dark red color and clearcoated it. While it matches, you can tell it doesn't have the same shine to it when the car is in the sun.

I was hoping to have a perfect match, and have them repaint the rear bumper to better match the car while I was at it. Do you think this is possible?

It is possible. I used to work in a body shop and they had a couple mustangs that color come thru and they always came out just right

Just take it to a good, reputable shop and you shouldn't have any issues. Just make sure they warranty their work tho

I also just quit working at an auto body shop.
Sounds to me like you need to find someone that you
trust to look over that car. Most of ques. about bodywork and paint need to be seen in person..

I also have a laser red Cobra. As I understand it, these cars are first painted with a base coat of either gold or silver (depending on the year) then the red tint, and finally the clearcoat. I had a 95 laser red GT when I bought the Cobra and although both cars had the same paint code in the door jam (E9), side by side they were two completely different shades of red. The explanation that I received from the folks at SVT was that in 95 the base coat was silver and in 96 it was gold. Makes sense to me.

Yep has to do all with the base coat. But a good shop should have no problem if you live in a small town like me ask friends and anyone else see where they have had there cars worked on..And go form there dont just go to one shop check around and find a good one...
