Paint Question

Put a coat of paint on my fastback over the weekend just to get it into one color. The shine wasn't there on the basecoat, so I added a clear...still nothing. I realized afterward that I hadn't used anything to take the water out of the compressed air, could that have been the cause or am I missing something? Thanks.

To clarify, my process was 1 coat of base, wet sand, 2nd coat of base, wet sand, clear. Never with the base or even after the clear did I see much gloss. I would have done more, but this is just a temporary paint job. Any thoughts? Thanks.
