So I go see a guy since my paint is completely faded all over on my 1995 mustang gt.

He tells me for color code E9 there's the first coat of color then a second coat of color and then the protective coat.
Here's the part I don't believe, he said that its a hundred dollars for a pint and that a pint would only cover this size(he made a circle with his thumb and pointer). At that price it would cost more than five-thousand dollars in just in paint.

Anyone want to shed some light on what the hell he's talking about?
Actual quotes, including labor and sanding?

Thanks, Jordan

It's not uncommon for a reputable paint shop to charge that much money to do a complete base coat/clear coat paint job including prep, body work, sanding, priming, sanding, sealing, masking and painting your car. I was quoted 300+ a gallon just for the PPG red base that's on my car. Whether or not you choose to employ the shop is your business. If it was me.I'd take it to several shops if I was gonna pay someone to do it, and not just stop at one guy.

You can always go to MAACO.
It'll cost you about 500.00. It will look like a 500.00 dollar paint job, it'll last like a 500.00 paint job. In the end, you'll understand what the hell he was talking about.

That paint is a tri stage as your paint guy indicated. I think he is exaggerating a bit as far as coverage. However, reds are an expensive pigment so the price will be more for reds than other colors. Also with the tri stage it costs more since it is a 3 step paint job and requires more paint.

Depending on the shop, I would estimate 2k-4k. Depends on shop rates and such in your area too. Just go to some reputable body shops in your area and get some estimates. They're usually free.

I plan to get multiple quotes, this guy isn't a shop it's just a guy who does work and is a friend of my mechanic I use. But 2 to 4k is different a better ball park than what he was considering. I understood that it cost more because its red and 3 stage but still the price was near outrageous.
Also I've read so much bad about MAACO, why waste 500 instead of putting 500 to a good job? But thanks guys.

i dont know how the maaco is by you per say but the one here does a great job if you pay the price to have it prepped.. this is not the 500$ job this was 1500 and is parked outside and looks great the paint is almost 4 years old. This is a good friend of mines car

I do bodywork for a living. What part of the country are you in? If you are close to Tennessee I could hook you up.

I don't know if I would go back to a Laser Red (E9) on a car. My old T-bird was that color, and it faded out to Laser Pink over time. Your painter is correct that it is a tri-color paint, which means usually a silver base, a red base, and then a tinted red clearcoat. It is expensive to paint, and difficult to blend.

For the most part, expect to spend 3-4K for a quality job. You can sometimes cut that down a bit by doing some of the prepwork.

Well my back end I had a crap paint job done on it and its faded (it wasn't done by maaco, just done badly). The front end still has original paint from the factory and is only very slightly faded. I wouldn't mind changing colors though red is a very mean looking color, even if its stock E9.
My car has had a few dents in it in the past years but they've been bumped out and look not nearly as bad or noticeable.

Also I'm in the Central Texas area for anyone who was wondering.
