Couple of weeks ago, I posted a query on how to go about this, and now that I've done it---and got good results---I'll share how I did it.
First, I had some bubbling paint to take care of. These rims had seen several winters.
I rough sanded them with a detail sander, and finished them by hand with 3m open coat P320, followed by 600 grit till baby-ass smooth and feather edged. I sanded all the little nicks and some crub rash similarly. I did NOT sand the good paint.
Then I washed the whole deal down with ordinary paint thinner and dried it thoroughly with paper towels. I used blue painter's tape and newspaper to mask off the tire & the inner rim. Then I took a tack rag & wiped the surface to be painted down very thoroughly. Surprising what residue that tack rag picked up.
I used no primer. I sprayed it with Motorcraft Argent spray paint. Several thin coats with about 10-15 minutes drying time in between. After drying about an hour, I hit it with Dupli-color clear High performance wheel coating, again several thin coats. I got the Argent from 5.0 resto, and everything else from Pep Boys.
Super results & a good match to the original appearance.
