Please help...My '96 GT was towed to the mechanic because the key broke in the ignition. The mech replaced the tumbler. They subsequently asked for the extra key and key fob, informing me that they were needed to "disengage the factory installed security system". After taking them the key and fob the car still would not start. They mentioned that the theft light on the dash was blinking after they would try to start the car. They said they downloaded all information on the face of the earth that they could. I know now that I should have taken my car to the dealer; but the reality is that I did not. They tried putting the old ignition switch with the new tumbler, etc.

Does anyone know how to disengage the PATS (I am assuming it's the PATS that is engaged). Or does anyone have a clue about what is going on or what needs to be done.

Desparately waiting to ride my Stang again,
SAY

you need to call a locksmith. they will have to hook up a computer to your OBD port and reflash your pats system to accept the new keys. you will be out about an extra $120 just for the programming not to mention the keys.the only other way to disable PATS to get a custom tune.

It still won't start even with the extra already programed key??? I hope your mechanic installed the PATS reciever ring that fits around the ignition cylinder.

Did your extra key work before?

Thank you both for the reply. I did a lot of reading last night and educated myself on the whole PATS thing. Appartently the mechanic did not do the same. Today the mech told me that the codes they were receiving were codes as if someone was trying to steal the car and then they realized that the keys they got with the tumbler were NON-programmable. <-- that was my first clue. Then, Saleen, he informed me that he was going to take the new tumbler to locksmith to have re-keyed to match my old key. Which brings me to the answer to your question, Svttech, yes my extra key did work before. He later told me that the locksmith said one thing and Ford said another...so the bottom line there was he made the decision not have the new tumbler re-keyed. Did the mech have a clue about the PATS receiver ring, I don't know, but I seriously doubt it.
The mech said my original tumbler was messed up. So I can only imagine what the dealer is going to say needs to be replaced .

I had them put everything back the way it was. The tow company is going to tow my Stang to Ford tomorrow morning. Even this leaves me scared, because I have not had good experiences with the service departments at dealers .

Feeling hopeless, weeks x 1,
