In case y'all don't know, I work at a computer repair business so I see all kinds of interesting computer problems. This one is definitely the worst I've seen as far as physical damage goes. The pics are pretty much self explanatory, but I will say in the first pic the only thing I had done is remove the cover.

Notice the discoloration on the left side from heat. There's one chip blown you can see there, and the one below that is almost de-soldered from the board. If you look at the CPU socket, you can see where the clip for the heatsink broke off. Im just wondering how long these people ran it with no heatsink before it finally fried...

Side note, my web server is down so Im hosting these pics from home, so they may take a while to load.

I like the videos on the net of the chips overclocked and popping off the board.

That's what you get for overclocking without water cooling..

Hey, I like the satelite photo of the little city you took. (that's what it looks like to me at 3 am).

Kinda related (if you dont mind): I have been meaning to download one of those CPU monitoring programs (for temps). Do yout think those are useful?
And is there anything that an idiot can do to improve cooling? I try and keep the vents for the fans and the area around the tower clean (I need to put something like nylons over the vents maybe - it would act like a little air cleaner).

Any easy things one can do to help the machines out?

No overclocking on this one, that's what happens when you buy an E-Machine! And that's not my pc, I work at a computer shop and somebody brought it in for repair.

HISSIN, CPU monitoring programs are nice for overclocking where heat is a big concern. For your average machine, they're kinda pointless unless you're just curious what your temps are. If you're having lock up/random rebooting issues you could use a monitoring program for troubleshooting.

For improved cooling, add fans. 80mm is the standard case fan size, I have 3 in my machine. One on the front, one on the side cover, and one on the back. Or you could just remove the side cover for a quick easy fix.

I dont even know what overclocking is, so maybe I'm alright.

I might DL one of those programs just to see what it says though. Thank you.

Depending on your CPU, anything below 50*C is good. 50*C and up, and you could start running into heat related problems.

Basically, the CPU speed is determined by a clock multiplier times the bus speed, so 200mhz bus and 11 clock multiplier equals 2200mhz, or 2.2ghz speed. Overclocking is changing one of those numbers to increase the total speed. I have my machine currently at 210mhz bus x 11 for 2300mhz. It's free HP for my comp.

It took my old AMD XP literally 5 seconds to fry without a Heatsink.
