I tried a small piece of tin with holes punched in it placed in front of my pcv valve to see if it would help stop the pcv from sucking up oil. Well, after 400 miles including 1 trip to the track the oil still went down 1/2 a quart on my dipstick. I found this catchcan package and was wondering about giving it a try.

Why dont you just use the filters that fit on an air compressor to remove moisture?

I put mine in the line b/t the power pipe and the oil filler tube. The Campbell Hausfeld brand filters are $11 at Walmart for a smaller one, and about $20 for a slightly larger one. They are clear and you can LOOK to see if there is oil.

How long would it take for one of those filters to become clogged and stop the pcv system from breathing properly ? At least with this catchcan, being 2 1/2" in diameter and almost 6"s high I could recover some of that expensive oil I use to put back into the oil filler cap to be used again while at the same time allowing my pcv system to work properly.
Is there are large enough reservoir with the filter you speak of?

The filter just 'blocks' the oil and the oil falls down. It is not large enough to collect A LOT of oil...but if there is THAT much oil going in there..there is another problem. I myself wouldnt reuse that oil anyway.

I have the blue one that it says for $12 at Walmart. The one above it in black is made SPECIFICALLY for oil. That Razor's edge is not far from me, and I saw a guy with one in his car, but it is a little bit more $$.

Well, half a quart in 500 km's is a fair amount wouldn't you say? That only includes 4 runs down the track and a little horsing around on the street.

Why wouldn't you reuse that oil. It's just clean fully synthetic oil getting sucked away by the intake to be burned off anyway.

Thanks for that info. I''' have to see if the Walmart up here carries that. What are the dimensions on it ?

It's only about 4-6" tall. You cant use that one for synthetic oil. You can try razor's edge for their version.

I was just about to say that. I just got back from Canadian Tire and looked at the same version you have. It said right on the glass "do not use with synthetic oil". Our Walmart up here didn't have anything like that.

Has anyone else on here measured how much oil they're using through the pcv ?

When would most of the oil be getting sucked? During idle in heavy traffic? I know it would suck up oil upon deceleration as well.

Apparently the aftermarket lower intakes do have baffles but they're half the size of the stock baffle and really do a lousy job of stopping the oil from splashing up into the pcv.

I was just at my local Canadian Tire store and they can order me a catch can setup similar to the one in the above posted link. I'll be able to get it for around $80 Canadian instead of 80 US and I won't have to order it from Texas.

so this will prevent the oil from pouring into the intake?

I noties some oil in one of the extra vaccum outlets that i have capped and hope thats is not what the inside of my intake looks like

Yes it will. Read the link I posted on the 1st post of this thread. The install instructions are there also. This reservoir or catchcan will catch the oil mist as it blows by the pcv and be caught in this canister. There's a baffle inside and specially designed ridges of some sort to help prevent that oil from coming back out of the can while vacuum travels through it. I'll simply empty it once a week and put that oil right back into the oil filler neck. There's also a release valve at teh bottom for emptying the can. I suppose you could tap into the oil pan if you wanted and when the car came to a stop it would just drain right back into the oil pan.
The catch can I'm looking at has a window to help indicate when the can is full.
The dimensions on the one I posted are 2 1/2" in diameter and roughly 6 " high, so I would guestimate that this thing should hold a good 1/3 of a litre/quart anyway.

That will be the next thing I do after I finally get this under control. I want to find something that I can spray right into the intake with the engine running so I can completely clean out the entire system. I'd like to blast and entire can of something directly in through the MAF without hitting the small wire in there of course, and give the entire intake and combustion chamber system a good flush.
