I am ready to remove the last four bolts holding the steering column up in place. Will I have enough room after disconnecting the wire harness to lower the column and remove the brake assembly bracket and reinstall the clutch setup?
I'm hoping it will clear the column.

Thanks

1991 GT 5.0

yes if you've disconected the wires going to the column to allow it to hang or drop down with out pulling on the wires you'll be fine.

the steering column isn't the bitch. it's this crap little plastic box mounted to a thin metal bracket that will give you fits....it's to the left of the column under the dash( if you were sitting in the seat which hopefully you removed other wise it's harder to get do) ......

be patient, it will come out, although you may invent some new curse words..........good luck:D

post back when you get it out and let us know how it went

Thanks for the tip!

[I;ll look for that plastic box when I get back under the dash. Yes, I did take the seat out, much easier to work under dash.
When you did your conversion, were you able to use the old AOD crossmember with the T5z? I'm installing a T5 with this set up, some people have told me you can use the old one, some say you have to change it?

Motor is out for overhaul with 125,000. Machine shop said motor was still in good shape for that amount of mileage.
What clutch did you use?

Thanks for your help, I'll keep you posted as this project continues!!!!!!

you need one from a t-5, but...

the only difference is, if you look at the old crossmember, the tubes at the ends that the bushings and bolts go through, there are some tack welds holding those tubes in place. if you grind those off and slide them back or forward and re tacked them you'd have a t-5 cross memeber. same basic part just those tubes are tacked in a different position as the t-5 sits back another half inch or so...some have re used the aod cross member but that might be hard on the tranny mount, if it even fit......it would be at the very end of those slotted holes.....

i just bought a t-5 cross memeber because i didn't wanna mess with it and i wasn't sure of the difference. if you a buy a t-5 corssmember and hold them side by side you'll see what i mean. so it can be done if you feel like messing with it.

i used a king cobra clutch during my swap...

i reused mine i had no problems! when putting the pedal assembly back in remove the factory quadrant first!!!(if ur gonna replace it) its a!@#$% to get off once its in place! also remove the clutch pedal it will make sticking it back in just a little easier trust me!

I yanked the whole steering column out of the car when I did mine. Made life real easy....for my friend who took on the pedal assembly! muwahahahha...actually he said it wasn't that bad.

Anway I was able to re-use my aod crossmember without a problem.

pedal assembly out

[
I removed the old pedal assembly. On the back of the one I'm installing is a plastic quadrant. There are two of them, one large and a small rachet type. Do I remove both of these and what about the spring on the back of it. The new quadrant just sits on there with the clip?

Any advise will be appreciated !!

Shoule I remove the clutch pedal from the assembly when reinstalling or just pull the entire steering shaft out of the way?

check the other post down a few i answered a couple of your questions...

one other thing......these pedal assemblies.......on the top front of the pedal assembly there is a hole or a notch for the one bolt that comes straight down from the underside of the dash......

look at the old pedals and the new ones.......make sure that hole is the same size or if it's slotted because putting it back in can be a pain if that hole isn't notched or if it's off a little......like i said it is that front hole on the pedal assmbly looking at it as if it was installed in the car.......hold the two side by side you may be able to see what i mean.....

My piece of advice is to use an aftermarket quadrant.

When we did the swap on the 90 GT, we reused the factory quadrant from the 86 that I took the pedal assembly out of, and I'll be darned if it wasn't the 2nd day with the T5, the quadrant broke. I bought an aluminum one and had to drop the column again to get it on.
I felt stupid.
Save yourself the potential trouble and put a good aftermarket aluminum quad on the first time and don't worry about it later. That's what I would do if I did it over again.

Just my .02$
