It's a bit hard to tell with the reflection in the picture but it look's like pedestal to me. Look's like it's a Y 302 GT-40 Head which I believe are designed for pedestal mount.... Some machining could easely solve that so you can use stud's.

I thought they were Stud ? These heads are GT-40 Y303 Aluminums, I thought the difference between the pedestal & the stud was there was an opening between mounting points for the rockers ?


The GT-40 X303 Aluminums do have a different mounting pattern than the Y303's see below,

I don't believe any Ford Racing heads are stud mount......don't quote me on that though.

The threaded holes dont look large enough for studs. I'm going with pedestal.

If a 5/16 bolt screws into the boss it's a Pedestal.

Literally, you can use either. Pedestal heads will accept the special 5/16 and 3/8 combo studs.

Thouroughly agree, 5/16=pedestal, I believe 7/16 is the standard hole for stud

The reason I am asking is I'm trying to buy some rockers for these heads but don't know what to get, is there 2 or 3 different kinds of rockers, Pedistal, Bolt on & Stud right ?

Or is Pedistal considered Bolt ons ?

ok can someone recommend some roller rockers to use with the GT-40 Y303 Aluminim heads I have ?

Preferrably some that I do not have to replace valve covers to use ?

pedistal and bolt on rockers are one in the same. Just different terminology.

I would assume--and I might be wrong--assembled heads would come with the studs installed. I, however, would use the "bolt" information above and get a 5/16 bolt and see if it fits.

Now that I looked at the picture a little closer I noticed the little parallel lines on either side of the bolt holes. Lines that would have been left by the pedestal channels. Guideplates probably wouldnt have done that.

Ya I went ahead & bought a set of CRANE 1.7 Roller Rockers, hopefully there will be no valve cover clearance problems, just out of curiosity these rockers should bolt up fine with no valve/piston clearance problems right ?

Hey man i know you've probably already found a answer for your head question. So this is for everybody else. that particular head you cannot use pedestal mounts. A pedestal rocker mount head has a square notch cut out on the mount casting. If you have that then you have to buy a screw in stud conversion kit which fills in the nothch and has a push rod guide on it. There only about $70.00. So you will be just fine buying true rollers as long as they come with studs in the kit, if not you'll just have to buy them according to the thread size.
